Derbyshire have signed the rising Pakistani spinner, Sufiyan Muqeem, for the upcoming T20 Blast 2026. He will play six games for the club in May, showcasing his mastery with the ball in English conditions for the first time.
Due to Sufyan’s recent performances in Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), he caught the attention of the club and is now set to lead their spin attack in the T20 Blast 2026. Derbyshire's head of cricket, Mickey Arthur, especially praised the potential of Sufiyan Muqeem while describing him as a rising star in T20 cricket.
“Signing overseas players with so many tournaments overlapping can be difficult, so we’ve done well to sign two current international spinners to ensure we have balance in our squad through the whole campaign,” said Derbyshire's head of cricket, Mickey Arthur.
He further added that Sufyan is hungry for success, which makes him a perfect fit for the evolving Derbyshire team. The former Pakistan coach termed Sufyan a “gem”, as he possesses a skill set that is very valuable to the Derbyshire attack.
"Sufiyan is a rising star in T20 cricket and someone I've already had the pleasure of working with already [in the BPL], so I've seen his quality and resilience in pressure situations first-hand.” said Mickey Arthur.
“When it comes to recruitment, the person matters just as much as the player and we've signed a gem in Sufyan. He's hungry for success and I know he will be a fantastic addition to our team for the first half of the Vitality Blast." added Mickey Arthur.
Sufyan Muqeem also expressed his excitement about joining Derbyshire, saying that he looks forward to performing well in England while working with Mickey Arthur.
"I'm excited to be joining the Falcons and working with Mickey again, he's a great coach and I'm looking forward to playing in England." said Sufyan Muqeem.
