Daniil Medvedev faces one of the most intriguing second-round tests of the 2026 US Open when he meets American wildcard Sebastian Gorzny.

Medvedev Wants More Consistency

Medvedev remains one of the most accomplished players in the draw.

The 30-year-old won the US Open in 2021 and has also reached the final in 2019 and 2023. His relationship with the New York crowd has often been unpredictable, but the atmosphere has also helped turn him into one of the tournament's most recognisable personalities.

The 22-year-old American wildcard defeated Belgium's Raphael Collignon after saving five match points. The contest lasted almost four hours, with Gorzny eventually winning 3-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(9).

He produced 59 winners during the match and showed remarkable composure during the deciding tiebreak.

The victory was also Gorzny's first Grand Slam main-draw win. He recently graduated from the University of Texas, where he developed through college tennis before receiving his opportunity in New York.

That means the American enters the second round with confidence, but also with significantly less experience than Medvedev.
