The Bangladesh Cricket Board confirmed that both BPL games scheduled for Tuesday, December 30, were postponed following the death of former prime minister Khaleda Zia earlier in the morning. The ruling was passed immediately before the first match of the day, which was between Sylhet Titans and Chattogram Royals in the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.
She served as Bangladesh’s prime minister from 1991 to 1996 and again from 2001 to 2006. Being the first female prime minister in the country, she was an important political figure throughout the decades and led the Bangladesh Nationalist Party from 1984 onward.
The BCB acknowledged her influence on the game, saying:
"The BCB recalls with gratitude her [Zia's] constant blessings and good wishes for the progress of cricket in this country," a BCB statement said. "During her tenure as Prime Minister, she provided outstanding support for the development of cricket in Bangladesh, significantly contributing to improvements in cricket infrastructure and the sport's growth nationwide. Her vision and encouragement helped pave the way for many of the advancements the game enjoys today."
"In respect of the nation's mourning and in honour of Begum Khaleda Zia's legacy, the BCB announces that today's scheduled Bangladesh Premier League matches have been cancelled and will be rescheduled. Further details on the revised fixtures will be communicated in due course."
The BPL 2025/26 season began on December 26, and three matchdays have already been completed. The scheduled match between Dhaka Capitals and Rangpur Riders will also be rescheduled.
Since the existing calendar already includes natural pauses between matchdays, the authorities believe that it is not expected to create significant scheduling issues for teams or broadcasters.
The Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis that nine matches in the Dhaka First Division Cricket League, which were to be held between December 30 and January 1 have also been deferred.
"The postponed matches will be rescheduled, and a revised itinerary will be issued in due course," CCDM said.
