Ervine and Taylor Rescue Zimbabwe After Early Taskin Ahmed Blitz Against Bangladesh

Ervine and Taylor Rescue Zimbabwe After Early Taskin Ahmed Blitz Against Bangladesh

ABU DHABI: A masterful, rescue-act partnership between veteran batsmen Craig Ervine and Brendan Taylor guided Zimbabwe to a highly competitive first-innings total of 271/8 against Bangladesh in the opening match of the UAE ODI Tri-Series 2026.

After Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to bat first at the Zayed Cricket Stadium, they overcame a perilous top-order collapse to set a demanding target in this highly anticipated BAN vs ZIM encounter.

The match commenced with a fiery opening burst from the Bangladeshi bowling unit, spearheaded by the clinical speedster Taskin Ahmed. Taskin dismantled Zimbabwe's top order with precision in powerplay. He trapped opening batsman Brian Bennett leg-before-wicket before returning to claim the back-to-back wickets of Ben Curran and Tafadzwa Tsiga. Taskin's devastating introductory spell left the batting side reeling at a precarious 24/3 within the first seven overs.

However, this early adversity simply set the stage for Zimbabwe’s veteran core to mount a brilliant counter-offensive. Walking into the pressure cooker, Craig Ervine and Brendan Taylor utilized their vast reservoir of international experience to stage a monumental recovery. The legendary duo combined for a remarkable 150-run partnership for the fourth wicket, shifting the momentum of the opening match entirely.

Taylor looked in vintage, aggressive form, anchoring his team by taking on the Bangladeshi bowling attack with ten boundary strokes. During his majestic stay at the crease, he scored a spectacular 81 runs off 101 deliveries. In doing so, Taylor etched his name deeper into cricket folklore by overtaking the legendary Andy Flower to become Zimbabwe's all-time highest run-scorer in One Day International cricket.

At the other end, Ervine anchored the innings flawlessly with elegant strike rotation. He regularly deployed the sweep and reverse sweep to systematically neutralize the Bangladeshi spinners on a tightening surface. Ervine stepped up the scoring rate following Taylor's dismissal but unfortunately missed out on a well-deserved milestone when he was caught behind off Shoriful Islam for a superb 93 off 106 balls.

Following the departure of the set batsmen, late-innings cameos from tail-enders Wellington Masakadza and Newman Nyamhuri pushed the score forward. Driven by their crucial late acceleration, Zimbabwe scored an impressive 271/8 from 50 overs.

Taskin Ahmed finished as the pick of the bowlers for Bangladesh, securing exceptional figures of 3 for 44 from his 10-over quota. Shoriful Islam chipped in with two wickets to curb the final surge as Bangladesh prepared for a tactical under-the-lights run chase.
