Bangladesh Orders IPL Blackout After KKR Drop Mustafizur Rahman

Bangladesh Orders IPL Blackout After KKR Drop Mustafizur Rahman

Bangladesh has switched off the IPL 2026 broadcast, and the order came from the Information and Broadcasting Ministry. The officials acted after Kolkata Knight Riders released Mustafizur Rahman upon BCCI’s call. For now, the league stays off air, and the fallout keeps growing.

Officials said the decision followed Kolkata Knight Riders’ removal of Mustafizur Rahman ahead of the 2026 season. In a statement, the ministry said the move angered fans nationwide, leading to the broadcast suspension.

The IPL is scheduled to begin on March 26, but Bangladeshi television screens will remain blank when the league gets underway.

Political Reaction Spills Into Cricket

The issue escalated quickly after comments from Asif Nazrul, youth and sports adviser in Bangladesh’s interim administration. Writing on social media, he said the country would not tolerate what he described as disrespect toward its players or its cricketing identity.

The decision comes amid growing diplomatic strain that spills into sports. India’s scheduled tour of Bangladesh later this year is now on hold as well.

Senior officials at the Board of Control for Cricket in India said overseas tours require government approval, leaving the future schedule uncertain.

KKR Management Faces Mounting Backlash

Knight Riders had secured Mustafizur during the December auction, but political pressure inside India intensified soon after. Several leaders publicly objected to his presence in the squad, directing criticism at the franchise and its ownership group.

Focus soon moved to co-owner Shah Rukh Khan, and voices from different corners closed in, and the heat did not fade quickly. KKR later confirmed that Mustafizur’s release came on instructions from the BCCI. The franchise said it followed due process and would sign a replacement in line with league rules.

While cricket boards continue discussions behind closed doors, the immediate impact is clear. Fans in Bangladesh, long among the IPL’s most engaged overseas audiences, will miss the tournament entirely unless the ban is lifted.

For now, the blackout stands as another visible sign of how politics has begun to dictate cricketing decisions across the region, with consequences reaching well beyond the boundary rope.
