Sediqullah Atal Heroics Deny Bangladesh Victory in Epic Draw in 1st Test Against Afghanistan
Abu Dhabi: Sediqullah Atal played a match-saving innings on the final day to secure a thrilling draw for Afghanistan. The BAN vs AFG 1st Test concluded in an absolute epic, defying Bangladesh’s relentless pursuit of victory. Chasing an improbable target of 479 runs, Afghanistan stood resilient to finish on 346/8 after 142 overs, thwarting the visitors' stellar historical performance.
This clash will be remembered for record-shattering performances, featuring a fast-bowling hat-trick from Hasan Mahmud, a century on captaincy debut by Rahmat Shah, and a masterful counter-attacking ton by Litton Das.
Strong Starts and Captain's Resistance
The Bangladesh vs Afghanistan battle commenced with Bangladesh winning the toss and electing to bat. Openers Shadman Islam (67) and Tanzid Hasan (83) vindicated the choice with a highly aggressive opening partnership. Despite a fightback from Afghanistan's Mohammad Saleem (4/82), valuable middle-order contributions from Mominul Haque (39) and Litton Das (53) anchored Bangladesh to a robust 346 all out early on Day 2.
In response, Afghanistan's top order faced immediate danger from the Bangladeshi pacers. However, newly appointed Test captain Rahmat Shah led from the front. Forging a steady partnership with opener Abdul Malik (62), Rahmat anchored the innings beautifully, displaying flawless defense and textbook drives by the close of Day 2.
Historic Hat-Trick and the Looming Target
Day 3 belonged entirely to Bangladesh's 26-year-old speedster, Hasan Mahmud. Rahmat Shah completed an unbeaten 105, becoming the first Afghan player to score a century on Test captaincy debut. However, he ran completely out of partners due to a spectacular collapse triggered by Mahmud.
Mahmud became the first Bangladeshi fast bowler in history to claim a Test match hat-trick. Alongside Ebadot Hossain’s fierce 4/56, Mahmud’s 5/55 bundled Afghanistan out for 240, yielding a critical 106-run lead for Bangladesh.
Bangladesh dominated the second innings. A commanding 159-run partnership between Najmul Hossain Shanto (82) and Mushfiqur Rahim (81) on Day 3 set the stage for wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das on Day 4. Litton compiled a quickfire 102 runs to push Bangladesh to 372/7 declared, setting an overwhelming fourth-innings target of 479. Before Day 4 ended, Bangladesh’s pacers struck early, leaving Afghanistan in a precarious position at 132/3.
Atal's Epic Blockathon Earns a Draw
Entering the final day of the BAN vs AFG Test, Bangladesh required 7 wickets, while Afghanistan required a near-impossible 347 runs. What followed was a masterclass in defensive Test batting by young opener Sediqullah Atal.
As Mehidy Hasan Miraz (3/73) and Ebadot Hossain (3/50) chipped away at the middle order from the other end, Atal remained completely immovable. Showing incredible composure, Atal faced a staggering 332 deliveries, striking 9 fours and 3 sixes to post a heroic maiden Test century (111). Accompanied by vital rearguard blockathons from Ikram Alikhil (33) and Qais Ahmad (49), Atal defied the entire Bangladeshi bowling attack for over 90 overs on Day 5 to secure a memorable draw.
