ABU DHABI: A spirited afternoon fightback from Afghanistan’s pace attack pegged back Bangladesh after a blistering opening stand, leaving the BAN vs AFG one-off test day 1 hanging in a delicate balance. Bangladesh finished the opening day at 317 for 8 after 84 overs at the Zayed Cricket Stadium.

Opting to bat first on a dry, hard Abu Dhabi surface, Bangladesh initially appeared on course for a massive first-innings total. Openers Tanzid Hasan Tamim and Shadman Islam attacked from the outset, combining for an explosive 124-run opening partnership in just 23 overs. Tanzid played with uninhibited aggression, smashing a quick-fire 83 off 71 balls, complete with 8 boundaries and 4 sixes. He looked certain to reach his second Test century until Afghanistan debutant Ismat Alam tempted him with a wider delivery, inducing an edge to the wicketkeeper.

Despite losing Tanzid, Bangladesh navigated their way to a commanding 134 for 1 at the lunch interval. Shadman Islam anchored the subsequent sessions with a gritty 67 off 111 balls. However, the afternoon session belonged entirely to a rejuvenated Afghanistan bowling unit. Under the leadership of newly appointed Test captain Rahmat Shah, the Afghan quicks utilized a hint of reverse swing in the intense 40°C heat to stifle the scoring rate and secure vital breakthroughs.

The momentum completely shifted post-lunch as Bangladesh suffered a worrying middle-order collapse. Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto fell for a brisk 29, including two sixes, while veteran batsman Mushfiqur Rahim was clean-bowled by Yamin Ahmadzai for a seven-ball duck.

Ahmadzai proved instrumental in keeping the pressure on the visitors, extracting crucial lateral movement to dismiss the dangerous Mominul Haque for 39.

Litton Das attempted a late rescue mission, striking a composed 53 off 89 balls to steady the lower order. Yet, Afghanistan’s bowlers refused to let the game slip away. Seamer Mohammad Saleem spearheaded the late-day surge, claiming three critical wickets for 70 runs. Saleem finally ended Das's resistance and cut through the lower order. Ismat Alam got another crucial wicket of Mehidy Hasan Miraz (24).

By the time stumps were drawn, Afghanistan had successfully clawed their way back into the contest after Bangladesh's dominant morning display. Tailenders Nayeem Hasan (11*) and Taijul Islam (4*) successfully defended the final overs against the second new ball to ensure no further damage occurred before the end of play.

Both teams will return on Day 2 knowing that a clinical morning session could dictate the entire trajectory of this standalone match.

Mohammad Saleem's late three-wicket burst checked Bangladesh's early momentum after Tanzid Hasan's quickfire 83 on BAN vs AFG One-Off Test Day 1 in Abu Dhabi.

BAN vs AFG One-Off Test Day 1: Afghan Bowlers Strike Back

Bangladesh made an aggressive start to their one-off Test against Afghanistan on October 9, reaching 70/0 after winning the toss and electing to bat at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

Tanzid Hasan set the early pace, moving to 50 not out, while Shadman Islam provided support with an unbeaten 15 from 39 deliveries. Bangladesh's opening pair gave the hosts a solid platform in the first session, leaving Afghanistan searching for their first breakthrough.

Bangladesh Openers Take Control

Tanzid was the more attacking of the two batters, striking seven fours and a six during his quick start. His strike rate of 122.50 put early pressure on the Afghan bowlers, who struggled to contain the scoring.

Shadman, meanwhile, played a more measured innings. He faced 39 balls and hit one boundary, allowing Tanzid to take the lead in the scoring while keeping his wicket intact.

Bangladesh's total also included five extras, comprising one no-ball and four byes. At 70 without loss, the opening partnership had already given the hosts a promising start to their first innings.

Afghanistan Search for a Breakthrough

Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi brought himself into the attack during the opening session, but he had yet to claim a wicket, conceding seven runs in his only over at the time of the update.

Yamin Ahmadzai bowled six overs for 37 runs, while Mohammad Saleem conceded 21 runs in five overs, including one maiden. Ismat Alam had bowled 0.6 overs without conceding a run.

The early figures reflected Bangladesh's control at the crease, particularly through Tanzid's attacking approach. Afghanistan need a wicket to disrupt the partnership before the opening batters build a much bigger total.

A Promising Start for Bangladesh

Bangladesh entered the match with an opportunity to establish control by batting first on the opening day. With Mominul Haque, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das among those still to bat, the hosts have considerable experience waiting in the dressing room.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Hasan Mahmud, Taijul Islam, Ebadot Hossain and Nayeem Hasan are also listed in Bangladesh's remaining batting order.

At the time of the update, Bangladesh held an 80% live win probability, compared with 7% for Afghanistan and 13% for a draw. Those figures can change considerably as the Test progresses.

For now, Bangladesh have the start they wanted. Tanzid is one run short of his half-century, Shadman remains unbeaten, and Afghanistan must find a way to break the opening stand before the innings gets away from them.

Bangladesh vs Afghanistan Live Score as Tanzid Hasan Hits 50

Afghanistan and Bangladesh will meet in a one-off Test match that will be played in the UAE from October 9. It is an important match for both teams that will test their grit in the sweltering heat of Abu Dhabi. The Afghan team have a lot of experience playing at this venue, so they will come into the contest with a slight advantage. The Tigers also understand this factor completely, so they would come with their own plans to put the pressure on the home side.

In this article, we will discuss how both sides are preparing for this clash that could remain highly competitive throughout the five days. Let’s take a look at the key plans and strategies with which both teams will aim to dominate the upcoming match.

Match Strategy for Afghanistan Team

Afghanistan do not have much experience playing Test cricket, which is why their results in the format have not been very convincing. This match gives them another opportunity to improve their standing in Test cricket by beating the Tigers comprehensively. They have several players in their lineup who need to perform consistently throughout the five days. Generally, their bowling is considered a strong part of the team, but the batters also need to put big scores on the board to put pressure on Bangladesh.

Talking about key players, Sediqullah Atal and Rahmat Shah will remain vital for their batting unit, as they can play big innings on the batting-friendly Abu Dhabi wicket. In the bowling department, Qais Ahmad could play a crucial role for them, as he is a specialist leg-spinner who can create problems for the Bangladeshi batters when the pitch starts to deteriorate in the last two days.

Match Strategy for Bangladesh Team

Bangladesh are coming into this contest on the back of strong performances. They recently defeated Australia in Darwin, which showcased how far they have come in Test cricket through consistent hard work. Considering this, the Tigers will aim to continue their strong run in the longest format by beating Afghanistan in the upcoming match. They have a quality pace battery that can create serious trouble for the Afghan batters, who generally lack the skill and temperament to face long spells in Test cricket.

Speaking about the key gameplan, Bangladesh will aim to put up a big score in the first innings, as that will help them to put pressure on the inexperienced Afghanistan team. Their bowling attack led by Hasan Mahmud have enough power to skittle the home side to a modest total, which will then allow them to post or chase any total in the second innings.

Probable Playing XI for Afghanistan

Abdul Malik, Sediqullah Atal, Rahmat Shah (c), Hashmatullah Shahidi, Shahidullah Kamal, Ikram Alikhil (wk), Zia-ur-Rehman, Qais Ahmad, Ziaur Rahman, Yamin Ahmadzai, Khalil Gurbaz

Probable Playing XI for Bangladesh

Shadman Islam, Soumya Sarkar, Najmul Hossain Shanto (c), Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Litton Das, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam, Shoriful Islam, Hasan Mahmud, Ebadot Hossain

Final Words

The upcoming match between Afghanistan vs Bangladesh is expected to be a tough encounter, as both teams have quality players in their lineups. The Tigers have a more experienced side compared to Afghanistan, so they have an edge over them in Test cricket. Nevertheless, the Afghan Atalan have plenty of experience playing in Abu Dhabi, which is their home ground in terms of international cricket. They can take advantage of it to put pressure on Bangladesh, making the upcoming match an evenly balanced contest that could go either way until the last day.
