Bangladesh Struggles In 1st T20I Powerplay With 43/3
BULAWAYO: Zimbabwe’s pacers ripped through the Bangladeshi top order in a blistering powerplay performance, leaving the visitors reeling at 43 for 3 after six overs at the Queens Sports Club.
Chasing a competitive target of 171, Bangladesh’s pursuit got off to a disastrous start under overcast skies and on a pitch offering significant lateral movement for the seamers. Opening batsman Tanzid Hasan showed early intent, striking three crisp boundaries in his 8-ball stay. However, his aggression proved short-lived.
Left-arm speedster Richard Ngarava extracted a sharp bounce off the surface, forcing an edge from Tanzid (16) that traveled straight to the wicketkeeper. Ngarava’s opening spell completely dismantled the visitors' momentum, as he extracted both swing and seam in the crisp Bulawayo air.
The pressure intensified from the opposite end as Blessing Muzarabani maintained a tight, probing line. Parvez Hossain Emon walked out to steady the ship but lasted only five deliveries, falling for just 5 after misjudging an inswinger from Muzarabani. The crowd erupted as the speedster, Ngarava, finished the powerplay with exceptional figures of 2 for 18 across his three overs.
With the scoreboard reading a precarious 34 for 3, skipper Towhid Hridoy attempted to anchor the innings. He managed a boundary to ease the tension but was soon undone by a sharp delivery from Victor Nyauchi, departing for a painstaking 9 runs off 8 balls.
Alongside him, YasirAli is on the crease with a task to rebuilding job. The playing conditions heavily favored the bowling side during the first six overs. Heavy cloud cover assisted the white ball to swing late, while the pitch offered variable bounce that kept the Bangladeshi batsmen guessing.
Zimbabwe's disciplined fielding complemented their bowlers, cutting down easy singles and putting immense psychological pressure on the batting side.Earlier in the day, Bangladesh won the toss and elected to field, restricting Zimbabwe to 170 for 6 despite a fine 44 from Brian Bennett.
However, with Bangladesh stuttering at 43 for 3 at the conclusion of the mandatory powerplay, the hosts have firmly seized the upper hand in this opening T20 international.
