BAN beat NZ in 1st T20I by Six Wickets: Towhid Hridoy Smashes Stunning 51

CHATTOGRAM: Bangladesh kickstarted their home T20I series against New Zealand with a clinical performance, securing a six-wicket victory at the Bir Shrestha Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Cricket Stadium. In a high-scoring encounter that ebbed and flowed, the hosts displayed remarkable composure to chase down a target of 183, anchored by a middle-order surge that left the visitors searching for answers.

Cleaver and Clarke Power Kiwi Total

Sent in to bat after Bangladesh won the toss, New Zealand faced an immediate hurdle with the late withdrawal of regular captain Tom Latham. Despite the early wicket of Tim Robinson, stand-in skipper Nick Kelly watched his top-order provide a masterclass in power-hitting. Dane Cleaver was the protagonist of the first half, racing to a 28-ball 51. Cleaver dismantled the pace attack during the powerplay, finding the boundary with ease and forcing Bangladesh to turn to their spinners earlier than planned.

Along with him, Katene Clarke (51 off 37) provided strong support, matching Cleaver’s aggression to ensure the run rate remained near ten per over. The pair’s 87-run stand set a perfect platform for a massive total. However, the introduction of Rishad Hossain shifted the momentum. The leg-spinner utilized the slight grip available on the surface to stifle the scoring, picking up crucial wickets in the middle overs.

While New Zealand’s middle order struggled to maintain the initial frenetic pace, late-innings contributions from Josh Clarkson (27 off 14) and Nick Kelly (39 off 27) pushed the Black Caps to a competitive 182/6.

Hridoy and Tanzid Master the Chase

Bangladesh’s response was characterized by early intent and mid-innings dominance. Openers Tanzid Hasan and Saif Hassan began the pursuit with calculated risks. Although Saif (17 off 16) fell early to a sharp delivery from Ben Lister in powerplay, Tanzid remained undeterred. His departure brought skipper Litton Das and the explosive Towhid Hridoy together, a partnership that would ultimately define the match.

Towhid Hridoy played the innings of the match, striking a whirlwind 51 off just 27 deliveries. Hridoy was particularly severe on the Kiwi debutants, Nathan Smith and Matthew Fisher, repeatedly clearing the ropes to bring the Chattogram crowd to its feet. Shamim Hossain (33* off 13)  played an experienced knock at the other end.

As the match entered the death overs, the composure of the Bangladeshi batsmen stood in stark contrast to the wavering lengths of the New Zealand bowlers. With 20 runs needed off the final three overs, the hosts made short work of the remaining target, crossing the line with 12 balls to spare.

This victory gives Bangladesh a 1-0 lead in the three-match series and highlights their growing prowess in the shortest format of the game.
