Ban vs NZ 1st T20I Live: Cleaver, Clarke Fifties Power NZ to 182

CHATTOGRAM: A blistering half-century from Dane Cleaver and a composed captain’s knock from Nick Kelly propelled New Zealand to a commanding 182/6 in the opening T20I of the series against Bangladesh. Despite a middle-order wobble triggered by leg-spinner Rishad Hossain, the Black Caps’ aggressive approach in the powerplay and death overs set a steep mountain for the hosts to climb at the Bir Shrestha Shahid Flight Lieutenant Motiur Rahman Cricket Stadium.

Cleaver and Clarke Ignite Explosive Start

Electing to bowl first, Bangladesh immediately regretted the decision as New Zealand’s openers came out with clear intent. While Tim Robinson was dismissed for a diamond duck following a sensational direct-hit run-out by Towhid Hridoy, the setback only served to spark a counter-attack.

Dane Cleaver took charge, smashing a rapid 51 off just 28 balls, laced with seven boundaries and one six. He was ably supported by Katene Clarke, who also contributed a quick-fire 51 off 37 to help New Zealand race to 61/1 within the first six overs. The pair’s aggression forced Bangladesh captain Litton Das to rotate through five different bowlers before the end of the powerplay.

Rishad Hossain’s Spin Web Stalls Momentum

Just as the visitors looked set for a total well beyond 200, Bangladesh’s rising star Rishad Hossain turned the tide. Introduced in the ninth over, Rishad’s extra bounce and sharp turn accounted for the dangerous Cleaver, who was cleaned up while attempting a sweep.

Rishad didn't stop there, removing the set Katene Clarke and later trapping the explosive Dane Cleaver in the same spell to finish with impressive figures of 2/32. Mahedi Hasan provided critical support from the other end, castling Dean Foxcroft for 3 to leave the Kiwis reeling at 130/5 in the 15th over.

With the innings at a crossroads, Josh Clarkson played a vital stabilizing role. Anchoring the back end of the innings, Josh finished unbeaten on 27 from 14 deliveries, expertly maneuvering the strike and finding the fence at crucial moments.

Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Shoriful Islam, though economical early on, were taken for 28 runs in their combined final overs, allowing New Zealand to finish with a flourish and a psychological advantage heading into the break.
