Bam Adebayo Crowned NBA Social Justice Champion Following Remarkable Community Impact

Bam Adebayo has been recognised for his off-court contributions after being named the NBA social justice champion for 2025. The National Basketball Association confirmed the Miami Heat star as this year’s recipient of the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Trophy, awarded to players driving social equality and supporting underserved communities.

The league also announced that a $100,000 charitable donation will be made in Adebayo’s name as part of the recognition. Explaining the decision, the NBA said the award “honors a current NBA player for pursuing social justice and ... for advancing Abdul-Jabbar's life mission to engage, empower and drive equality for individuals and groups who have been historically disadvantaged."

Adebayo’s community work has largely been carried out through the Bam Adebayo Foundation, which has funded multiple projects across South Florida and North Carolina during the current season. The foundation invested more than $563,000 into programmes linked to education support, youth outreach and food assistance.

Several of the initiatives focused on helping students from underserved backgrounds. Support included educational supplies, school uniforms and mattresses for pupils at The SEED School of Miami. The foundation also arranged transportation for thousands of children to attend the Miami Book Fair.

Its outreach programmes additionally included holiday food drives and a toy distribution campaign that reached more than 2,000 children. Unused items from the drive were later redirected to other local charities and support groups.

The foundation also backed youth development activities and financed upgrades to a basketball court at the Camillus House Homeless Shelter.

Adebayo said helping young people facing circumstances similar to his own upbringing remains one of the main reasons behind his work away from basketball.

The Miami Heat center becomes the sixth player to win the award since its introduction. Previous recipients include Stephen Curry and Carmelo Anthony.
