Maddinson Leads Australia's Second Innings

Maddinson Leads Australia's Second Innings

Australia started their second innings after being dismissed for 390 in the first innings, while South Africa managed 284. The hosts held a 106-run first-innings advantage and had increased it to 164 by the end of the latest session update.

Maddinson scored 37 off 31 balls, striking six fours and one six. His aggressive approach helped Australia move quickly in the second innings.

Labuschagne was unbeaten on four from four deliveries at the other end. Australia had scored 58 runs for the loss of one wicket in 8.5 overs, with six runs coming as leg byes.

Marco Jansen took the only wicket to fall, dismissing Travis Head for 11. Head was caught by Temba Bavuma in the seventh over, leaving Australia at 43/1.

Jansen Takes the Only Wicket

Jansen finished the update with figures of 1/28 from 4.5 overs. Wiaan Mulder conceded 24 runs in four overs without taking a wicket.

Australia still had Steve Smith, Matt Renshaw, Alex Carey, Beau Webster, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon and Josh Hazlewood listed to bat. The remaining batting depth gives the hosts room to build a larger target if they maintain their current position.

South Africa will need further wickets to prevent Australia from extending the lead. The visitors' response will depend on how quickly they can break the developing partnership and limit the hosts' scoring.

Australia Hold the Advantage on Day 4

The live win probability favoured Australia at 57%, with the draw at 28% and South Africa at 15%. Those figures reflected Australia's lead and their position early in the second innings, although the match remained open.

With Maddinson set and Labuschagne at the crease, Australia will look to add more runs before deciding how to manage the remainder of the Test. South Africa need wickets to keep the target within reach and give their batters a realistic chance of challenging the hosts.
