Australia Defeated Bangladesh In 3rd ODI Thriller After Cooper Connolly Masterclass

Australia Defeated Bangladesh In 3rd ODI Thriller After Cooper Connolly Masterclass

MIRPUR: A breathtaking, counter-attacking century by Cooper, Australia defeated Bangladesh in 3rd ODI. His century gave the visitors thrilling one-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the third ODI at the Shere Bangla National Stadium.

Despite Australia’s frantic chase, the day ultimately belonged to the hosts, who celebrated a historic, first-ever 2-1 bilateral ODI series triumph over the cricketing giants. Chasing a challenging target of 275, Australia’s top order crumbled spectacularly under the intense pressure of a roaring Mirpur crowd. Bangladesh’s premier left-arm seamer, Shoriful Islam, tore through the Australian batting lineup with an extraordinary exhibition of swing and precision. Shoriful single-handedly dismantled the visitors' powerhouse top four, leaving the world champions reeling at a catastrophic 48 for 4.

Here, playing the innings of his life, the young all-rounder single-handedly anchored the recovery. Exhibiting maturity far beyond his years, Connolly blended fierce aggression with calculated risk-taking. He single-handedly resurrected the innings, smoking boundaries at will to silence the home crowd. Connolly blasted a monumental 149 runs, a majestic knock punctuated by crisp drives and authoritative pulls.

However, Shoriful returned late in the innings to complete a magnificent figures of 6 for 48, triggering yet another collapse. When Connolly fell with the finish line in sight, a tense finale ensued. Australia's tailenders endured a nerve-shredding climax, but managed to scramble the final runs, reaching 277 for 9 with just three balls to spare in the final over.

Earlier in the day, after electing to bat first, Bangladesh put together a clinical and disciplined batting performance to finish on a highly competitive 274 for 5. The foundation was laid by opening batsman Litton Das, whose elegant 58-run knock provided the early momentum. The centerpiece of the Tigers' innings, however, was a masterclass in middle-order consolidation by Towhid Hridoy. Hridoy paced his innings beautifully, top-scoring with a brilliant 83. His tactical running between the wickets and explosive acceleration in the death overs allowed Bangladesh to launch a late assault against the Australian bowlers, setting what looked like a series-clinching total.

While Australia avoided the ultimate ignominy of a 3-0 clean sweep, the series victory marks a seismic shift for Bangladesh cricket. Having secured dominant victories in the first two ODIs, by 86 runs and 5 wickets respectively, the Tigers have proven that their subcontinental dominance is no longer an anomaly.

The two teams will now head to Chattogram, where the action shifts to the shortest format. A three-match T20I series kicks off on Wednesday, June 17, with Bangladesh eager to maintain their red-hot momentum and Australia desperate to redeem themselves.
