Australia Defeats Zimbabwe in 3rd ODI After Final-Over Drama

HARARE: Australia completed a dramatic, nerve-shredding victory as Australia defeats Zimbabwe in 3rd ODI by one wicket with just one ball to spare. The heart-stopping finish at the Harare Sports Club ensured that Australia whitewashed Zimbabwe in the ODI series with a hard-fought 3-0 margin. 

Chasing a tricky target of 272 on a slowing surface, Australia looked comfortable on course before a sensational collapse triggered a chaotic, grandstand finale. Zimbabwe’s target was anchored earlier in the day by their skipper, Sikandar Raza, who bludgeoned a breathtaking, unbeaten 81 off 72 deliveries. Raza was ably supported by veterans Craig Ervine (59) and Innocent Kaia, who struck a gritty 55 before being forced to retire hurt with a hamstring strain. 

Despite a clinical regular spell from Australia’s quick Nathan Ellis (3/50), Zimbabwe pushed their way to a highly competitive 271/8 in their allocated 50 overs.

Australia’s response began in disastrous fashion. Zimbabwe’s seamer Brad Evans breathed life into the home crowd by dismissing the dangerous opening pair of Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh cheaply. At a precariously poised 25/2, player-of-the-series Cooper Connolly (21) and Josh Inglis stabilized the rocking ship with a 52-run partnership.

The defining innings of the match belonged to Inglis. The wicketkeeper-batsman displayed exceptional composure, pacing his innings beautifully to score a brilliant 103 off 102 balls. He combined with Alex Carey (34) to keep Australia firmly in the driver’s seat. However, the reintroduction of Evans broke the stand as Carey fell to a stunning, diving catch by Wesley Madhevere.

When Inglis was finally removed by Evans, who finished with an excellent 4/47, panic set into the Australian camp. Wickets tumbled as Graeme Cremer (2/53) struck vital blows, leaving Australia’s tail to navigate a highly tense finish on a knife-edge.The game boiled down to an absolute cliffhanger in the final over bowled by Ernest Masuku. 

Needing 9 runs from the final 6 balls with just one wicket intact, Nathan Ellis showed nerves of steel by blasting a massive six off the very first delivery to instantly break the mounting pressure. Drama peaked on the third ball when Madhevere uncharacteristically dropped a tough chance in the deep, allowing the batsmen to scamper for two runs and level the scores. 

With only one run required and the threat of a historic Super Over looming, Masuku bowled a low full-toss that Ellis safely jabbed into the offside. Ellis and Spencer Johnson took off for a frantic single, completing the run to seal the match with one ball remaining.

While Zimbabwe walked away empty-handed in terms of points, their fighting spirit pushed the world heavyweights to the absolute limit. Ultimately, Australia’s lower-order resilience ensured the tourists avoided an upset and secured a flawless clean sweep on Zimbabwean soil.
