AUS vs ZIM 3rd ODI: Sikandar Raza's Knock Powers Zimbabwe Scored 271/8 in Harare

HARARE: An unbeaten masterclass from captain Sikandar Raza propelled Zimbabwe to a competitive total in the AUS vs ZIM 3rd ODI at the Harare Sports Club. 

Electing to bat first in an attempt to salvage pride in the final match of the series, Zimbabwe scored 271 for 8 in 50 overs. The hosts put up their best batting display of the bilateral assignment, recovering well from early setbacks to challenge the dominant Australian bowling unit.

The home team’s innings got off to a brisk but unstable start. Young opener Brian Bennett showcased intent, compiling a quickfire 30 off 29 balls featuring five boundaries and a solitary six before miscuing a short ball from Nathan Ellis straight to Travis Head. Ben Curran fell shortly after for 7, feathering an edge down the leg side off Spencer Johnson after an Australian DRS review. 

Returning veteran Brendan Taylor also failed to make a lasting impact, cleaned up by a trademark flipper from Adam Zampa for just 9, leaving Zimbabwe in a precarious position at 68 for 3.

However, a resolute 80-run partnership between Craig Ervine and Innocent Kaia steadied the ship. Kaia looked in sublime touch, grinding out a vital 55 off 66 deliveries before tragically being forced to retire hurt due to a sharp hamstring strain. Ervine anchored the anchor role beautifully, registering a well-deserved half-century (59 off 79 balls) before hoisting Zampa directly to Matt Renshaw at long-on.

The back-end of the innings explicitly belonged to the skipper. Walking in at the fall of Kaia, Raza assumed total control of the death overs. Unleashing a flurry of innovative strokes, he smashed 81* off just 72 deliveries, punishing the touring speedsters with seven boundaries and a towering maximum. 

Despite wickets tumbling around him in the Powerplay 3 layout, with lower-order batters Wesley Madhevere (1) and Brad Evans (11) failing to stay long, Raza’s lone warrior act ensured the total crossed the 270-run psychological threshold.

For Australia, Nathan Ellis was the standout performer with the ball, breaking partnerships at critical junctures to finish with authoritative figures of 3 for 50. Spencer Johnson (2/50) and the economical Adam Zampa (2/53) provided ideal support to ensure Zimbabwe was kept within a chaseable spectrum on an excellent Harare batting surface.
