Atletico Madrid Defeats Real Madrid 2-1 After Huijsen Red

MADRID: Atletico Madrid secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Real Madrid at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano stadium, moving ahead of their bitter city rivals into second place in the current La Liga standings. 

The highly tactical Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid fixture was ultimately decided early in the second half by a pivotal red card and a quick succession of goals, ensuring that Atletico Madrid defeats Real Madrid to close the gap on league leaders Barcelona in the domestic championship race.

The opening 45 minutes focused heavily on defensive organization, mid-block structures, and rigid tactical discipline from both managers on the touchline. Diego Simeone’s side successfully disrupted Real Madrid’s possession play in the middle third of the pitch, leading to a succession of physical confrontations and tactical fouls. 

The most notable disciplinary incident of the first half occurred in the 39th minute when Atletico midfielder Cristian Romero tackled Jude Bellingham. A lengthy video assistant referee (VAR) review evaluated the challenge for a potential red card offense, but the on-field referee's initial yellow card decision stood firmly. 

Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid side struggled to create clear-cut openings inside the penalty area, leaving the first half entirely scoreless. The complexion of the match turned decisively just seven minutes after the second-half restart. During a rapid Atletico counter-attack, forward Giuliano Simeone was pulled down inside the penalty box by Real Madrid central defender Dean Huijsen. 

Following a brief VAR confirmation, the referee awarded a penalty kick to the home side and showed Huijsen a straight red card for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity. Spain international defender Alejandro Grimaldo converted the spot-kick in the 53rd minute, sending the opposing goalkeeper the wrong way to give the hosts a deserved lead.

Atletico’s experienced defense managed five minutes of intense stoppage time without conceding any further clear scoring opportunities to the opposition. 

The final match whistle confirmed the three vital points, leaving Atletico Madrid five points behind league leaders Barcelona, while Real Madrid drops down into third place, one single point further back in the current league table.
