Manchester City’s hopes of winning the Premier League ended on Tuesday after a 1-1 draw away at Bournemouth, a result that gave Arsenal an uncatchable lead at the top and their first league title in 22 years.
City needed a win to stay in the race going into Sunday’s final game, but Eli Junior Kroupi’s brilliant first-half goal at the Vitality Stadium stopped them in their tracks. The result also ended Pep Guardiola’s bid for a seventh league title in what could be his last season after a hugely successful spell in charge.
Kroupi gave Bournemouth the lead in the 39th minute after Adrien Truffert sent a ball through on the left. Truffert found the 19-year-old French forward, who controlled it and then curled a fine shot into the far corner past Gianluigi Donnarumma, who could not move in time.
Erling Haaland pulled one back for City deep into stoppage time when Rodri’s shot came back off the post and fell kindly to him. Haaland quickly picked up the ball, hoping for another chance, but the final whistle came moments later and ended City’s comeback hopes.
It should be noted that Guardiola’s team were playing their third match in six days, coming after a big FA Cup win over Chelsea on Saturday, and the manager said it showed in their performance.
"A tough game, we knew it. We fought, first half was really good. Second half, we started really good... at the end, we find a goal but too late." said Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.
After finishing third last year following four straight Premier League titles, Guardiola’s team had found their rhythm again at the right time. They looked ready for another late push for the trophy, alongside their FA Cup and League Cup wins this season. Unfortunately, that push has now finally ended, as the latest draw has given Arsenal an unassailable lead and a well-deserved Premier League crown after 22 years.
"We were close to arrive in the last moment but on behalf of all Manchester City and my team, we congratulate Arsenal and Mikel (Arteta) for this Premier League. They deserve it." said Pep Guardiola.
