Bukayo Saka’s goal proved enough for Arsenal to beat Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League semi-final on Tuesday, sending the Gunners through to the final for the first time in 20 years.
Arsenal were on the front foot for most of the match, especially in a strong first half where they kept Atletico pinned back and constantly pushed forward around their penalty area. The visitors stayed disciplined defensively and tried to hold their shape under pressure.
The breakthrough came just before half-time after a steady spell of pressure. The move began when Leandro Trossard pounced on a loose ball from Marc Pubill and tried his luck with a shot, which was well saved by Jan Oblak. However, the rebound dropped kindly for Bukayo Saka, who took his chance and put the hosts ahead.
Atletico Madrid came out with more urgency after the break as they pushed forward out of necessity. Giuliano Simeone came very close early in the second half when he found himself with an open goal in front of him, but instead of shooting first time, he took an extra touch. That gave Gabriel the chance to step in and clear the danger.
It wasn’t the only big chance missed in the second half. Viktor Gyökeres also had an opportunity to seal the game around the middle of the half, but he failed to convert. Still, his miss didn’t end up costing as much as Simeone’s. In the closing stages, Atleti threw everything forward and spent a lot of time in the attacking third, but they struggled to really trouble Arsenal’s defence.
Arsenal will now face the winner of the other semi-final between Bayern Munich vs Paris Saint-Germain, who finish their tie on Wednesday in Germany, in the final on May 30 at the Puskás Arena in Budapest.
Speaking after the match, Arsenal’s manager Mikel Arteta said that it is a special night, as the club has reached the UEFA Champions League final after a long period of time.
“It’s an amazing night to live this kind of moment with the players and everyone at the club. It’s an incredible feeling.” said Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.
“It makes sense with all of the things we do and we go through. I see so many happy faces and proud of what we’re doing. It was unbelievable right from the beginning, the supporters waiting for us outside the stadium, the energy and passion that they put in. It was just great to win this.” added Mikel Arteta.
