Alyssa Healy made the headlines in the Women’s World Cup match against India at Visakhapatnam. She played a remarkable knock that shattered the hopes of the Indian team, even though they had posted a big total in the first innings. The class of Alyssa Healy countered everything India threw at her. From pace to spin bowling, Alyssa Healy dented everything, giving Australia a memorable World Cup win against India at Visakhapatnam.
Alyssa Healy played superbly in the second innings when Australia needed to chase a big target. She scored a flawless 142 in 107 balls, giving Australia a strong impetus right from the start of the batting lineup. Her innings proved to be the bedrock of the Australian team’s chase, as they sealed the win in the final over with three wickets in hand.
After the match, Alyssa Healy said that it was her day in the middle, and she made the most of it by scoring a century.
"I think I was just trying to contribute. I think it needed somebody to make a hundred to chase down that total. Obviously, you'd probably like two to make hundreds just to make it easy, but somebody needed to, if they got set, to cash in and have a good day. So, yeah, it was probably. It was my day in the end. It hasn't been my day of late, but it was my day today, which was really cool,” said Alyssa Healy at the post-match press conference.
She further said that playing the winning shot in the end was her major goal. However, she couldn’t do that due to some timely India fightback. Still, giving the team a commanding position to march forward is something she is happy with alongside the whole squad.
"And to get ourselves, obviously I would have liked to be there a little bit longer and probably see it home a little bit more, but I think to get ourselves in a winning position at that point in time was really cool, and I'll probably reflect on that a little bit later and be a little bit happy," said Alyssa Healy.
The Australian captain also praised the bowling performance of N Shree Charani. She bowled beautifully during the middle overs.
"It wasn't a distinct plan as such. Charani was actually getting quite a bit of spin; she was kind of the pick of the bowlers today. We identified that really well and thought that if we can capitalise on some of the pace bowlers, that would be handy knowing that they really have [only] five bowlers in their attack. So, yeah, we thought if we could attack that it'd be great. But it wasn't really a plan as such, it just panned out that way on the day, and I think with the wicket sliding on it probably enabled us to do that," said Alyssa Healy.
She further appreciated the bowling performance of Annabel Sutherland, who produced a remarkable spell of attacking bowling when India was looking well set to take the game away. It was due to her spell that Australia came back into the match, halting the charge of the Indian batters in the middle.
"Bellsy's spell, I think, we got our length right in that department. We bowled a little bit poorly at times and probably gave India an opportunity to cash in whether that be at the start of the over or the end of the over, and I think we couldn't really create a lot of pressure. But Alana King and Annabel Sutherland actually created a little bit of a partnership there, created some pressure, created some opportunities. And then Bellsy sort of cashed in at her end. So that was really cool,” said Alyssa Healy.
With this splendid victory, Australia is once again looking confident for the rest of the tournament. They have high hopes to defend the title, though tougher teams are waiting for them in the upcoming matches.
