Former franchise owner of Multan Sultans, Ali Tareen, shared his reaction after the team was renamed Rawalpindi. Notably, he was part of the auction in which various participants engaged in a heated bidding war. However, no bid was submitted from his side.
Ali Tareen shared a cryptic message on X, writing “Janoob Ki Pehchan” after the franchise was renamed Rawalpindi. The new owner of the team, Walee Technologies, immediately changed the name of the franchise after it was acquired for a record deal of Rs 2.45 billion in the recent auction.
Interestingly, Ali Tareen owned the franchise for seven years with the same iconic name. However, his relations with the PSL administration recently deteriorated due to serious disagreements on various issues. As a result, he chose not to renew the contract of the franchise for the next 10 years, resulting in a new auction for the team.
The chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Mohsin Naqvi, also shared his reaction after the franchise was renamed Rawalpindi. Naqvi said that he has an affection for the Multan Sultans name, but the new owner has all the rights to change the franchise name as per their preference.
"I have an affection for Multan Sultans. When he [Ahsan] announced changing the city name, my heart got sad because it is our brand and we will now definitely think about its future," said the PCB chairman, Mohsin Naqvi.
"But, instructing someone who is spending 2.45 billion rupees to keep or let go of Multan Sultans was not possible. I cannot do anything about it," added Mohsin Naqvi.
