Alexander Zverev vs Luciano Darderi US Open Match Preview
Alexander Zverev meets Italy's Luciano Darderi in the fourth round of the 2026 US Open on Monday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The top seed endured a difficult opening two rounds in New York, winning back-to-back five-set matches against Lorenzo Sonego and Quentin Halys. Zverev then found a more comfortable level against Alejandro Tabilo, beating the No. 25 seed 6-2, 7-6(2), 6-2 to reach the last 16.
The victory was an important response after Zverev spent almost nine hours on court during his first two matches. He now faces another dangerous opponent in Darderi, who has already reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time.

Zverev Finds His Rhythm After Two Marathons
Zverev's first two matches demanded plenty from him. He defeated Sonego in five sets before overcoming Halys 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-7(3), 6-3 in a four-hour, 33-minute battle.
The German looked much sharper against Tabilo. He controlled the baseline exchanges and produced a convincing straight-sets win, giving himself a much-needed confidence boost before the second week.
Zverev also arrives in New York as the reigning Roland Garros champion and the top seed, making him one of the leading contenders for the title.
Darderi Reaches the Last 16
Darderi has put together an impressive run to reach the fourth round.
The No. 21 seed survived Dalibor Svrcina in four sets before producing another strong performance against Dane Sweeny. Darderi defeated the Australian 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 in the third round.
The Italian has shown plenty of power from the baseline and has already demonstrated that he can handle the pressure of a Grand Slam stage.
Darderi Has Already Beaten Zverev
This matchup carries an interesting recent storyline.
Darderi defeated Zverev in their only previous meeting, producing a major upset at the 2026 Rome Masters. He saved four match points before completing the comeback.
Zverev will therefore have plenty of reason to approach this match carefully. The German remains the clear favourite on paper, but Darderi has already shown that he can trouble him.
