Zverev Makes the Early Breakthrough

Zverev settled into the match by taking the opening set 6-4, but Halys refused to let the top seed dictate the contest.

The Frenchman responded by taking the second set 6-4 and continued to pressure Zverev with aggressive shot-making. The German then edged the third set in a tiebreak, 7-6(3), moving within one set of victory.

Halys again showed his resilience in the fourth set. He forced another tiebreak and won it 7-3, sending the match into a deciding fifth set.

Halys Pushes Zverev to the Limit

The Frenchman briefly held a 4-1 lead in the third set before Zverev fought his way back into contention. The top seed managed to steady his game when the match was at its most difficult.

Zverev eventually found the breakthrough in the fifth set and established enough control to finish the match 6-3.

The victory was particularly demanding given his five-set opener against Sonego, which lasted four hours and 52 minutes.

Zverev Keeps His US Open Run Alive

Despite the physical demands of two consecutive five-set matches, Zverev held his nerve to move into the third round.

The German, who won his first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros earlier this year, will next face No. 25 seed Alejandro Tabilo.
