Afghanistan produced a dominant performance against Zimbabwe in the 1st T20I at Harare. They defeated the hosts by a big margin of 53 runs, courtesy of some fine bowling by Azmatullah Omarzai and Mujeeb ur Rehman. The Afghan side showcased the importance of experience and class in the first game, as they thrashed the struggling Zimbabwe team that looked clueless from the start of the match.
Batting first, Afghanistan took great advantage of the Powerplay by playing positive cricket. Both Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran looked in good touch while taking down the opening attack of Zimbabwe. They ensured to play aggressive cricket while keeping wickets in hand, so that a strong base can be built right at the start.
Ibrahim Zadran continued his stellar form by scoring yet another fifty, while Rahmanullah Gurbaz also contributed with a solid knock at the top of the order. Their partnership was broken when Sikandar Raza made the breakthrough in the 8th over. He dismissed Rahmanullah Gurbaz cleverly when the batter was trying to step up the scoring rate by playing aggressively.
This was the stage when Zimbabwe tried to apply some pressure, but Azmatullah Omarzai countered their plans with a composed innings. He played sensibly during the middle overs, ensuring not to lose more wickets by playing rash shots. As a result, his knock once again provided a strong platform for the incoming batters, who then launched big shots toward the end of the innings.
Shahidullah was especially impressive during the last phase of the 1st innings. He smashed quick boundaries that allowed the visitors to march towards a big total. Due to his belligerent hitting, Afghanistan managed to score 180 runs at the end of the 1st innings.
When Zimbabwe came out to chase the target, they looked completely out of form. The home side didn’t have any plan, as they lost back-to-back wickets quite cheaply in the Powerplay. It was the bowling masterclass of Afghanistan that made batting quite difficult for them. They failed to handle the attack of Omarzai and Mujeeb at the start, as both bowlers produced stunning deliveries to dismiss the opening batting order of the home side.
The middle order of Zimbabwe also struggled badly. They failed to lift the scoring rate, which kept rising with each passing over. As a result, more pressure was applied, and the home team eventually succumbed to it. They got out after making just 127 runs, giving Afghanistan a big victory in the 1st T20I at Harare. After the match, Azmatullah Omarzai won the Player of the Match award, as he performed exceptionally well in both innings of the game.
