Afghanistan Beat Australia to Win Their First Hong Kong Sixes Title
Afghanistan beat Australia by four wickets on Sunday to win the Hong Kong Sixes for the first time. The final was played at Mission Road Ground in Mong Kok, and Afghanistan finished the chase with five balls left.
Australia chose to bat first and scored 115-4 in their six overs. Afghanistan, led by Gulbadin Naib, then reached 116-2 in just 5.1 overs.
Australia’s captain, Jack Wood, retired out for five runs in the second over. The idea was to give more of his team a turn to bat in the six-a-side game. Max Bryant gave the innings a fast start, scoring 44 off 14 balls with four fours and four sixes before Nangeyalia Khan got him out. Nick Hobson made 23 off eight balls, including two fours and two sixes. Alex Ross stayed not out on 29 off 10 balls, with three fours and two sixes. Chris Green hit a six off the only ball he faced, and Patrick Dooley retired out without facing a ball.
For Afghanistan, Karim Janat and Nangeyalia Khan each took one wicket. Janat gave away 27 runs and Khan gave away 17.
Afghanistan lost both openers early, within the first two overs. Janat made 13 off five balls before Dooley caught and bowled him. Naib scored 17 off six balls, with a four and two sixes, before Green got him out.
At 32-2 after 1.4 overs, Afghanistan needed a strong partnership, and Imran Mir and Farmanullah Safi delivered one. Farmanullah hit 26 off seven balls, including four sixes. Mir was the star, finishing not out on 53 off only 14 balls with two fours and seven sixes. He hit the winning shot off Ross on the first ball of the last over, which sealed the four-wicket win.
