Phil Simmons has dismissed suggestions that Bangladesh are facing internal problems ahead of their home Test series against West Indies. His comments came after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) moved Mohammad Ashraful out of the batting coach role in the week before the series.

The board confirmed the change on Saturday and appointed Mohammad Salahuddin as the temporary batting coach. Bangladesh have had a difficult run recently, drawing their only Test against Afghanistan in the UAE before losing to both Afghanistan and Zimbabwe in the ODI tri-series.

Ashraful’s removal has led to questions about whether the board acted because of those results. However, reports also suggest the BCB is nearing an agreement with another batting coach, who could join the team before their tour of South Africa.

"Is this the first time there's chaos before a match?" Simmons replied when asked about the environment of the dressing room ahead of the WI Test series.

"Every series is important. Those that we played earlier in the year were important too. But the thing is how we go about our preparation for the series.” said Phil Simmons.

“I think that the group that was here has been excellent in the last three or four days. They've been doing their work and now the whole team joins together. It's what we do over the next two days, it's not what's happening outside, it's what we do as a team to prepare." added Phil Simmons.

Simmons further said that Bangladesh are currently focused on the West Indies series, as the upcoming matches are important to their hopes of reaching the World Test Championship final.

"I think everyone is very focused on the Test match. The same in the Test match in Abu Dhabi, I think everyone was focused on the Test match and what's in front of them. I think there's that goal and that desire to play in the World Test Championship and this is the first time we've had that opportunity to be there. So I think everyone is going to be up and ready for the Test matches," said Phil Simmons.

Simmons then reiterated his support for Bangladesh against West Indies, saying he is backing the Tigers to do well against his home side without letting emotions get in the way.

"I have very good memories and pleasant memories of that tour. I was the leader of the winning side and hopefully I'll have the same memories here, being the winner of the winning side. I'm not that emotional to say, well look, oh it's the West Indies. When they're playing someone else, I'm on their side. When I'm playing against them, I still want to win the series," said Phil Simmons.

Phil Simmons has played down claims of chaos in Bangladesh’s camp ahead of the West Indies Test series following Mohammad Ashraful’s removal as batting coach.

The hosts will look to use their spin advantage, while Roston Chase’s side aims to overcome the challenges of playing Test cricket in Asian conditions.

West Indies Captain: Roston Chase

Bangladesh vs West Indies 1st Test Preview

The BAN vs WI 1st Test presents an important challenge for both sides as they begin their red-ball campaign in Dhaka. Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto will expect his team to make full use of familiar conditions and put the visitors under pressure with spin.

West Indies, meanwhile, enters the contest under the leadership of Roston Chase. Their recent warm-up performance, which saw them score 336/6 against a BCB XI, offered encouraging signs ahead of the Test. However, maintaining that form over five days against Bangladesh’s bowling attack will be a different challenge.

Pitch Report: What to Expect in Dhaka

The Mirpur pitch is expected to play a significant role in determining the outcome. Batters could find reasonable scoring opportunities early in the match, but the surface is likely to become more difficult as the game progresses.

Spinners may receive greater assistance from the third day onwards, with turn and inconsistent bounce potentially creating problems for both batting lineups. Winning the toss could prove valuable, particularly if the captain chooses to bat first and build a substantial total before conditions deteriorate.

Bangladesh’s greater familiarity with these surfaces gives them a potential advantage. West Indies will need patience and disciplined shot selection to counter the hosts' spin options.

BAN vs WI Head-to-Heads (Last 5 Tests)

West Indies have won four of the five most recent meetings listed in the supplied record, while Bangladesh claimed one victory. The results give the visitors an advantage in this recent head-to-head comparison.

Bangladesh Predicted XI

Shadman Islam, Tanzid Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto (c), Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Jaker Ali (wk), Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam, Nayeem Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud.

West Indies Predicted XI

BAN vs WI 1st Test Key Player Battles to Watch

Taijul Islam vs Tagenarine Chanderpaul

Taijul's accuracy and ability to exploit turning conditions could make life difficult for Chanderpaul at the top of the order. The West Indies opener will need to defend patiently and avoid giving Bangladesh early wickets.

Mushfiqur Rahim vs Jomel Warrican

Mushfiqur's experience against spin could prove valuable as the pitch begins to turn. Warrican will look to vary his flight and pace, forcing the veteran batter to make difficult decisions outside his comfort zone.

Shamar Joseph vs Najmul Hossain Shanto

Shamar Joseph offers West Indies a chance to strike before spin becomes the dominant factor. His pace and ability to generate movement could test Shanto early in the innings. Bangladesh's captain will need to negotiate that threat before settling into his batting.

BAN vs WI 1st Test Preview: Dhaka Pitch, XIs & Key Battles

The race for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final heats up in the subcontinent as the West Indies tour of Bangladesh 2026 officially shifts into top gear. Following a highly competitive two-day warm-up fixture that concluded in a high-scoring draw at the Bashundhara Sports City Cricket Ground, public focus turns squarely toward a high-stakes, two-Test series.

For the hosts, this upcoming red-ball series presents a golden opportunity to strengthen their positioning on the global stage. Meanwhile, a transitioning Caribbean side targets a critical spoiler role on traditionally spin-friendly tracks.

WTC Standings: A Crucial Junction

This iteration of the bilateral series carries immense context within the current World Test Championship cycle. Bangladesh enters this home series comfortably perched in 4th place on the WTC table, maintaining a competitive points percentage.

Fresh off a balanced stint against global heavyweights earlier in the year, the Tigers recognize that a 2-0 clean sweep against the visitors could catapult them further up, bringing a historic appearance in the WTC Final within tangible reach.

Conversely, the West Indies find themselves lower in the standings, sitting at 8th position. Virtually out of contention for the final, the Caribbean team’s primary objective revolves around gaining elite red-ball exposure for their younger players and disrupting the championship calculations of their subcontinental opponents.

BAN vs WI Squads

Both cricket boards have finalized their sheets for the upcoming Tests. The rosters reflect vastly contrasting strategic directions, blending experienced anchors with emerging young talents.

Bangladesh Test Squad

Najmul Hossain Shanto (c), Mehidy Hasan Miraz (vc), Taskin Ahmed, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mominul Haque, Litton Das (wk), Jaker Ali Anik, Shadman Islam, Tanzid Hasan, Tawhid Hridoy, Taijul Islam, Nayeem Hasan, Hasan Mahmud, Shoriful Islam, Ebadot Hossain Chowdhury

West Indies Test Squad

Roston Chase (c), Jomel Warrican (vc), Joshua Da Silva (wk), Amir Jangoo (wk), Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Brandon King, John Campbell, Kavem Hodge, Justin Greaves, Shamar Joseph, Kemar Roach, Jayden Seales, Shamar Springer, Joshua Bishop, Kevin Wickham

BAN vs WI Key Player Battles to Watch in Schedule

The tactical chess match between the two sides highlights several key individual confrontations that will dictate the flow of the series.

Taijul Islam vs. Tagenarine Chanderpaul

Tagenarine Chanderpaul’s defensive technique and patient approach will meet the relentless left-arm orthodox spin of Taijul Islam. Taijul is lethal on turning tracks in Dhaka and Sylhet, making this a classic test of subcontinental resilience against spin.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz vs. Roston Chase

This is a battle of the premier off-spinning all-rounders. Both players hold massive responsibilities with both bat and ball for their respective teams. Whichever player manages to control the middle overs while providing lower-order runs will hand their team a massive strategic advantage.

Mushfiqur Rahim vs. Shamar Joseph

The sheer experience and anchoring prowess of veteran Mushfiqur Rahim faces the fiery pace, raw bounce, and aggressive lengths of young fast bowling sensation Shamar Joseph. Joseph's ability to extract life out of old balls will be crucial if the West Indies are to break through Bangladesh's experienced batting core.

BAN vs WI Schedule: Squads, and Key Players to Watch

Bangladesh have made changes to their Test squad for the upcoming series against West Indies, bringing Taskin Ahmed back into the side for the opening match in Dhaka on October 28. The fast bowler sat out the one-off Test against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi earlier this month, which finished in a draw. His return comes at the expense of Khaled Ahmed, who has now been dropped from the team.

Soumya Sarkar has also missed out on selection for the 15-player squad. Interestingly, he was part of the team in the recent Test matches, however, the selectors have now decided to drop him for the upcoming series.

The selectors have also picked Litton Das, who missed the UAE ODI tri-series due to a hip injury. Apart from him, Mehidy Hasan Miraz has also returned to the squad after recovering from a viral fever.

Meanwhile, Najmul Hossain Shanto will captain Bangladesh in the Test series, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam and Nayeem Hasan providing the spin options. Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Ebadot Hossain and Hasan Mahmud make up the pace attack, while Nahid Rana remains out as he recovers from a side strain.

Talking about the conditions, it remains to be seen whether the pitch at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka will favor fast bowlers or spinners. Bangladesh’s last Test at the venue, against Pakistan in May, lasted five days on a balanced surface. The Tigers won that match by 104 runs, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Nahid Rana taking five wickets each.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh could also consider Towhid Hridoy and Jaker Ali as options for the batting order. Hridoy recently hit a triple century in a first-class match in South Africa, but was left out of the playing XI against Afghanistan. Jaker, meanwhile, has not played a Test since June 2025.

Bangladesh Squad for First Test Against West Indies

Najmul Hossain Shanto (capt), Taskin Ahmed, Jaker Ali, Litton Das (wk), Mominul Haque, Tanzid Hasan, Ebadot Hossain, Tawhid Hridoy, Shadman Islam, Shoriful Islam, Taijul Islam, Hasan Mahmud, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mushfiqur Rahim, Nayeem Hasan

Bangladesh have recalled Taskin Ahmed for the first Test against West Indies, while Soumya Sarkar and Khaled Ahmed have been dropped from the squad.
