ZIM vs AFG 1st Test Day 1: Brendan Taylor's Century Powers Zimbabwe to 326/5

ZIM vs AFG 1st Test Day 1: Brendan Taylor's Century Powers Zimbabwe to 326/5

SHARJAH: Brendan Taylor's century put Zimbabwe firmly in the driver’s seat on ZIM vs AFG 1st Test Day 1. Electing to bat first after winning the toss at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Zimbabwe finished the opening day at a strong 326/5 after 87 overs.

The narrative of the day belonged entirely to Taylor's century. Walking in at a crucial juncture, the experienced right-hander anchored the innings with a brilliant 131 off 168 deliveries. His knock was a perfect blend of caution and aggression, blending elegant drives with decisive footwork against Afghanistan’s spin threat.

Taylor’s century proved to be the cornerstone of the Zimbabwean innings, shifting the momentum completely after Afghanistan’s bowlers threatened to find an early breakthrough.

Earlier in the day, Zimbabwe's openers set a steady foundation, blunting the new ball in Sharjah’s scorching heat. Innocent Kaia contributed a fluent 34 off 51 balls, striking five boundaries to push the opening stand to 60 runs before spooning a catch off leg-spinner Qais Ahmad. Opening partner Ben Curran then stepped up with a gritty, patient anchoring act, compiling 42 off 113 balls. Curran’s stay was eventually cut short by pace bowler Mohammad Saleem, who softened the opener up with consecutive bouncers before cleaning him up with a searing yorker in the blockhole.

Captain Craig Ervine fell cheaply for just 4 runs to Hashmatullah Shahidi, giving the Afghan side a brief sniff, but Zimbabwe’s batters immediately slammed the door shut.

Rising middle-order talent Brian Bennett showed immense poise, frustrating the home team's bowlers to construct a brilliant half-century. Bennett remained completely unbothered by the turning pitch, ending the day unbeaten on a stellar 71* off 128 deliveries. He found an active ally in Wesley Madhevere, who smashed a brisk 29* from 31 balls just before the close of play.

Afghanistan’s bowling unit endured a grueling, hot day in the field on a dry deck that offered very little assistance to the quicks. Left-arm orthodox spinner Zia-ur-Rehman shouldered a monumental workload, bowling an extended 30 overs. Though he gave away 118 runs under the Taylor onslaught, Zia-ur-Rehman fought back dynamically to finish with 2/118.

Zimbabwe’s dominant red-ball display marks a complete shift in power for the tour. Afghanistan had entered the match brimming with confidence after comfortably completing a 3-0 clean sweep in the T20I series. However, the transition to the five-day game has seen Zimbabwe completely assert their authority early on.

Heading into Day 2, Zimbabwe holds the definitive psychological advantage. With five wickets still intact and the pitch expected to deteriorate later in the match, the visitors will look to aggressively push their first-innings total past 450 tomorrow morning.
