Lamine Yamal said he was affected by anti-Muslim chants heard during Spain national football team’s goalless draw against Egypt national football team in Barcelona, as local authorities opened an investigation into the incident.
The chants were heard during the first half of the international friendly played at the RCDE Stadium. Reports indicated the chants were aimed at opposition supporters but were widely condemned after the match, particularly due to their religious nature.
Yamal later addressed the issue in a social media post, stating that although the chants were not directed at him personally, he still found them offensive.
"I am Muslim, alhamdulillah (thanks be to God)," Yamal posted on Instagram. "In the stadium there were chants of 'If you don't jump, you're a Muslim.' I know it was against the opposition and nothing personal, but as a Muslim it is still disrespectful and completely intolerable.
"I understand it's not all supporters, but to those that chant these things: to use religion as a way of mocking others inside a stadium is ignorant and racist.
"Football is to be enjoyed, to show your support, not to disrespect others for who they are or what they believe in."
Local police in Barcelona confirmed that an inquiry had been opened into the incident, focusing on reported Islamophobic and xenophobic chanting during the match. Authorities are reviewing footage and gathering evidence from the stadium.
Catalonia’s sports minister Berni Álvarez also condemned the incident and said the player would receive full support if required. He described the chants as unacceptable and said such behaviour had no place in sport.
Yamal, who was born in Barcelona to a Moroccan father and a mother from Equatorial Guinea, chose to represent Spain at international level despite interest from Morocco. He has already become a regular member of the national side and was part of the squad that won UEFA Euro 2024.
The winger is also expected to be included in Spain’s squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026.
