Kane Williamson is back, and Nathan Smith will also join him in the squad. The Blackcaps will play a 3-match ODI series against England, starting October 26 at Bay Oval.

Williamson skipped the T20Is against England and the Zimbabwe tour due to a minor medical issue. Now fit, he is ready to bat and provide value in the middle order. “I’m ready to get back on the field and help the team,” Williamson said.

That's an interesting thing for NZ fans as their experienced player is now in the team again.

Nathan Smith also joins him after recovering from an abdominal injury suffered in the 1st Test against Zimbabwe. Smith hasn’t played much cricket since August, but has now been fit to play again. “The rehab was tough, but I feel strong and ready,” he said. Smith’s all-round skills will add balance to New Zealand’s side.

Coach Rob Walter welcomed the duo. “Kane and Nathan give us experience and options. Their return strengthens the team,” he said. With several players injured, their inclusion is crucial.

Injuries hit hard. Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson, Adam Milne, Will O’Rourke, Glenn Phillips, and Ben Sears all miss out. That leaves Matt Henry and Kyle Jamieson to lead the pace attack. Henry has been New Zealand’s most lethal ODI bowler in 2025, taking 24 wickets in nine matches.

The squad mixes experience and youth. Tom Latham returns as wicketkeeper after a shoulder injury kept him out in Zimbabwe. Mitchell Santner leads the team and spin, supported by all-rounders Michael Bracewell, Rachin Ravindra, and Daryl Mitchell. Devon Conway and Mark Chapman strengthen the batting, while Zak Foulkes earns his first ODI call-up after strong performances for New Zealand A.

This series will test the Blackcaps. New Zealand must manage injuries, execute plans, and capitalize on home conditions. Williamson’s inclusion will be key in tense moments. Smith’s versatility will help the team adapt.

“This series is the start of our journey to the 2027 World Cup. We have a clear plan, and we want to execute it,” he said. The Blackcaps will face a strong English team in every department: pace, spin, batting depth, and fielding.

The return of Williamson and Smith sends a strong message. New Zealand is ready to set the tone for a long summer. Fans can expect aggressive cricket, smart strategies, and moments of brilliance from their favourite team.
