Italy's daunting chase of 166 at Eden Gardens began with immediate trouble as their top order struggled against the discipline of the West Indian new-ball pair. The collapse started in the second over when Justin Mosca, who had managed only 2 runs, was cleaned up by a perfect delivery from Matthew Forde. While his brother Anthony Mosca briefly provided a spark of hope by launching Akeal Hosein for two towering sixes in the following over, the momentum was short-lived.
Anthony's cameo ended at 14 when he was caught at short fine leg off the final ball of the 3rd over.
The pressure continued to mount as Gudakesh Motie and Shamar Joseph tightened the screws through the middle period. The defining blow for Italy’s hopes came in the 12th over when the well-set JJ Smuts (24) mistimed a sweep against Motie and was comfortably caught by Joseph at backward square leg.
By the end of the 14th over, Italy had slumped to 94/5, with the required run rate climbing above 11 per over. The West Indies now stand just five wickets away from a flawless group-stage finish as they head toward the Super 8s.
