Pakistan Faces Yet Another T20 Setback: What Lies Ahead for the National Team?

Pakistan Faces Yet Another T20 Setback: What Lies Ahead for the National Team?

Despite all the hype and claims, Pakistan once again showcased a disappointing performance in yet another ICC tournament. They didn’t live up to the expectations of fans who were expecting them to at least reach the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. It seemed the team wasn’t fully prepared for the tournament, as they lacked answers on several occasions. This led to their elimination from the Super Eights stage, despite winning their final match against Sri Lanka in a thrilling fashion.

Pakistan cricket fans are demanding answers for another failed performance in the ICC event. Many of them also speculate that the team does not have a strong future in the T20 format, as they have not won any major trophy or tournament in recent times. This is certainly a concerning fact that reflects Pakistan’s declining performance in the shortest format of the game. The green shirts had a great opportunity to achieve something special in the T20 World Cup 2026, but they squandered it once again.

In this article, we will try to understand what Pakistan cricket can do next to revive its fortunes in the T20 format. It is certainly not an impossible task, because Pakistan have the resources to once again become a strong name in T20 cricket. Let’s take a look at how Pakistan can make a comeback in T20 cricket by implementing a few changes in their game plans.

A Fresh Leader for a Fresh Start

Pakistan gave Salman Ali Agha the helm of T20I captaincy to deliver strong results, as the era of Babar Azam had been marked by disappointments in various ICC events. Agha took the charge with high hopes, as he vowed to change the direction of the team to play more positive cricket. While this approach by Agha was entirely correct, his own position in the team as a batter was questioned by many cricket experts.

Salman Ali Agha is undoubtedly a remarkable batter in both Test and ODI formats, but his credentials in the T20I format aren’t very encouraging. With just 916 runs in 52 matches, Agha is clearly lagging in producing the firepower needed in T20 cricket. Although he tried to make some adjustments in his game to better support the team’s cause, it was not enough to make Pakistan’s batting successful in the T20 format. This eventually created a big problem in the batting order, as the team failed to come up with a proper combination.

Now that Pakistan has lost another T20 tournament, many fans are questioning how Salman Ali Agha will justify his role in the batting order given his disappointing international stats. It has certainly raised questions about his position as captain, as he has not been able to win matches solely through his batting.

Need to Rethink Batting Strategy

Over the past year, Pakistan T20I team emphasized playing aggressive cricket. They changed the batting order of the team and introduced two new openers, Sahibzada Farhan and Saim Ayub, to give a fresh start to the team. Unfortunately, this strategy didn’t produce the required results as Saim failed to capitalize on the opportunity. Meanwhile, Sahibzada Farhan made the most of his chance and showcased his firepower in T20I cricket.

Having an unsettled opening also brought an impact in the middle order, as batters like Salman Ali Agha, Usman Khan or even Babar Azam didn’t deliver impactful performances. As a result, the whole batting order became a mess and Pakistan once again crumbed under this pressure. Now, there is an opportunity for the management to rethink the batting strategy, as the last one clearly failed. They might need some new faces at the opening as well as in the middle order to bolster the batting. It would be interesting to see how they will respond to this challenge, as there are plenty of players who can fill this void.

Final Words

There is no doubt that Pakistan cricket has loads of talent, but it somehow fails to produce impactful performances on the big stages. The recent debacle of the team in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 is a clear example why Pakistan needs a new approach in the T20 format. Over the past one year, the team tried to play with a different approach, but it didn’t produce the required results. Considering that, the onus will now be on the management to come up with a new strategy, otherwise, competing with top sides will remain to be a difficult task for the national team in ICC events.
