West Indies registered a big win over Zimbabwe in the latest Super Eights encounter of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. The star Caribbean batter, Shimron Hetmyer, showcased a stunning batting display in the first innings that helped West Indies to score the second highest total in the history of the ICC T20 World Cup.
Batting first, West Indies didn’t have a strong start, as they lost two wickets in the Powerplay. However, the arrival of Shimron Hetmyer at number three changed the momentum of the match. He played aggressively from ball one, showcasing his intent to score big in Mumbai’s Wankhede stadium.
Batting alongside Rovman Powell, Shimron Hetmyer built a big partnership that gave West Indies a strong impetus during the middle overs. He scored 85 off just 34 balls, helping West Indies to march towards a big total in the first innings.
After the dismissal of Hetmyer, Sherfane Rutherford and Romario Shepherd took the lead and guided West Indies to a mammoth total of 254 in the first innings.
When Zimbabwe came out to chase the target, they never looked in control against the smart West Indian attack. The experienced Caribbean spinners made batting difficult for Zimbabwe, as Matthew Forde, Akeal Hosein, and Gudakesh Motie took regular wickets to keep WI ahead in the game.
Sikandar Raza and Tony Munyonga built a small partnership during the middle overs, but they were unable to carry it forward, as Gudakesh Motie dismissed both to give West Indies a firm edge in the match.
After their dismissals, Brad Evans launched a counterattack towards the end, but he didn’t find any support from the other batters. As a result, he was dismissed by Matthew Forde after scoring quick 43 runs. His wicket eventually brought an end to Zimbabwe’s innings, as West Indies bowled them out for 147 to secure a big victory. By winning the match, they have now secured top position on the points table of Group 1 with a commanding 5.350 net run-rate.
