Former Wales captain Aaron Ramsey has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 35, bringing an end to a career that spanned nearly two decades across club and international levels.
Ramsey confirmed the decision in a statement, saying, “This has not been an easy decision to make. After a lot of consideration, I have decided to retire from football.” His final professional stint came with Mexican club Pumas UNAM, following spells in Europe and a return to his boyhood side Cardiff City.
Ramsey began his senior career at Cardiff in 2006 before earning a move to Arsenal FC, where he established himself as a key midfielder. He later featured for Juventus FC and OGC Nice, before returning to Cardiff for a second spell between 2023 and 2025.
On the international stage, Ramsey represented the Wales national football team 86 times after making his debut in 2008, scoring 21 goals. He served as captain and played a central role during one of the most competitive periods for the national side.
In his statement, Ramsey paid tribute to his international career and the support he received throughout.
“Firstly, I want to start with Wales. It has been my privilege to wear the Welsh shirt and experience so many incredible moments in it. It would not have been possible without the incredible input of all the managers I have played under and all the staff who have helped me in many ways,” he said.
“To the Red Wall. You have been there through thick and thin! You have been there through the highs and lows, and you have been an essential and indispensable part of our success. I can't thank you enough. We've been through everything together and it's been an honour to represent you. Diolch.”
Ramsey also acknowledged the role of his family in his career.
“And a huge thank you to my wife and children and all my family. Without you by my side throughout, none of this would have been possible,” he added.
Wales were unable to qualify for this year’s FIFA World Cup, marking the end of an era for one of their most experienced players.
