RANCHI: Virat Kohli really dug himself deeper into cricket history this past Sunday. He broke one of Sachin Tendulkar's big records in the first ODI against South Africa. That happened right at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi.
The Indian star put together a strong 135 runs from 120 balls. He hit 11 boundaries along with seven sixes to get to his 52nd ODI century.
With that milestone, Kohli went past Tendulkar’s mark for the most centuries in a single format, the legendary 51 Test hundreds.
Kohli brought up the record in the 38th over of India’s innings before falling while attempting a lofted shot, capping off yet another batting masterclass.
This great innings just built on his already impressive year so far. Earlier, he became the quickest player to hit 14,000 ODI runs. It took him only 287 innings, which beats everyone else in today's game by a lot.
Kohli's century helped drive India's solid showing on the field. Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul added fifties of their own to support it. In the end, the home team racked up 349 for 8 after their full 50 overs.
South Africa pushed hard with a tough chase that kept things exciting. They came close but could not quite make it. In the end, they got bowled out for 332 in 49.2 overs.
Kuldeep Yadav led the bowling attack for India with four key wickets. That effort locked in the win for his side.
