USA Defeats Paraguay In 4-1 Thriller To Open World Cup 2026 In Style

LOS ANGELES: The United States Men’s National Team launched its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in breathtaking fashion on Friday night. USA defeats Paraguay 4-1 before a rapturous crowd at Los Angeles Stadium.

The Group D opener was billed as a stern test for Mauricio Pochettino’s squad, but the hosts turned it into a statement of intent, combining defensive solidity with devastating attacking efficiency. Striker Folarin Balogun took center stage, netting a clinical first-half brace to put the Americans firmly in the driver's seat before a late moment of magic from Giovanni Reyna sealed the rout.

The USMNT could not have dreamt of a better start, breaking the deadlock after just seven minutes. High pressure forced an early corner, and when Weston McKennie whipped a dangerous, fizzing cross into the six-yard box, Paraguayan midfielder Damián Bobadilla could only deflect it into his own net.

With the early lead secured, the U.S. suffocated Paraguay with a high-intensity press, dictating a brisk tempo. The reward came in the 30th minute through a beautifully engineered team goal. Christian Pulisic carved open the South American backline with a precise, low pass, allowing Balogun to slide in and tap home from close range.

Paraguay struggled to cope with the Americans' fluid transitions, and deep into first-half stoppage time, Balogun struck again. Receiving the ball on the edge of the box, the forward cut inside and unleashed a ferocious, curling effort into the top-left corner, sending the stadium into euphoria.

However, the half-time break brought a wave of anxiety for the home fans, as captain Christian Pulisic was substituted as a precaution due to a minor calf injury.Without their talismanic winger, the U.S. ceded some control in the second half. Paraguay found a lifeline in the 73rd minute when substitute Mauricio capitalized on a rare defensive lapse, slamming home a failed clearance to pull the score to 3-1. The goal sparked a physical, disjointed stretch of play, with the frustrated visitors picking up five yellow cards over the course of the match.

Yet, the American backline held firm, anchored by an immaculate performance from Chris Richards, who completed all 83 of his passes with 100% accuracy.

In the eighth minute of stoppage time, Giovanni Reyna provided the perfect exclamation point. Standing over a late attack, Reyna effortlessly curled an outside-of-the-boot masterpiece into the far corner to cap off a historic night.

"To score four goals in a World Cup opener is massive for our confidence," Pochettino said post-match. "We played with high intensity, but our focus immediately shifts to recovery."

The emphatic 4-1 victory catapults the United States to the top of Group D with three points and a healthy plus-three goal difference. They will look to carry this monumental momentum into their second group match against Australia at Seattle's Lumen Field.
