The UAE cricket team is already facing controversy ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 after Mohammed Zohaib was pulled from the squad. The Emirates Cricket Board announced on Monday that the player was recalled to Dubai for breaching team discipline. The board believes that Zohaib failed to follow internal protocols, prompting the team management to take action.
In its official communication, the ECB stated that Zohaib’s recall was strictly linked to disciplinary matters and added that further clarity on the issue would be provided at a later stage. The board did not disclose specific details, maintaining that the matter remains under internal review.
The situation escalated when Zohaib publicly challenged the decision, rejecting the disciplinary explanation. The cricketer alleged that his removal was influenced by nationality rather than conduct. He claimed the team’s management group is dominated by individuals of Indian origin and argued that he was unfairly targeted because he is Pakistani.
Zohaib has urged the ECB to conduct a formal inquiry into the circumstances of his dismissal. His claims have sparked debate within cricket circles, especially given the timing of the decision so close to the start of a global tournament.
Despite the disruption, the UAE cricket team is pressing forward with its World Cup preparations. Led by experienced batter Mohammad Waseem, the side is scheduled to begin its ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 journey against New Zealand on Tuesday in Chennai.
The UAE squad features a balance of emerging talent and seasoned performers. Players such as Alishan Sharafu, Haider Ali, Junaid Siddique, and Rohid Khan are expected to play key roles as the team looks to make an impact on the global stage.
Following their opening match, the UAE will shift base to New Delhi for the remainder of their group-stage fixtures. They are set to face Canada on February 13, Afghanistan on February 16, and South Africa on February 18. With challenging opponents lined up, stability within the squad will be critical as the tournament progresses.
The Zohaib episode has added an unexpected layer of tension to UAE’s campaign, placing added focus on team unity and off-field management during a crucial phase of the competition.
