“We Want to Show Fear to the Bowlers”: Tilak Varma Declares Ahead of Super 8 Match Against WI

“We Want to Show Fear to the Bowlers”: Tilak Varma Declares Ahead of Super 8 Match Against WI

India have thrown down a statement ahead of their must-win clash against the West Indies, but inside the camp the message is less about numbers and more about mindset. After a stuttering start to their Super Eights phase, the defending champions have returned to what Tilak Varma calls their core identity, “fearless cricket.”

The 72-run demolition of Zimbabwe in Chennai was more than a victory; it was a reset. India’s batting unit, which had looked vulnerable earlier in the tournament, suddenly rediscovered its range.

A reshuffled top order provided early tempo, Abhishek Sharma broke his lean run with a high-impact half-century, and Hardik Pandya finished with authority. Yet, beyond the 250-plus total and the avalanche of boundaries, the real takeaway was intent.

“We want to play the fearless cricket, the brand of cricket we played today, and we played since last year,” Varma said. “The same intent we want to keep in the next game as well.”

The left-hander’s own cameo, a 19-ball 44, reflected that philosophy. Even after early setbacks in previous matches, India appears committed to maintaining tempo rather than retreating into caution.

“And we discussed that whatever the situation is, (even) if we lose three-four wickets in powerplay, we will bat with the same rhythm,” he added. “And we want to show the fear in opposition bowlers, that these guys are ready to hit each and every ball.”

That clarity of approach comes at a crucial moment in the T20 World Cup 2026. India entered the tournament as favourites but were exposed by disciplined bowling attacks, raising questions about balance and adaptability. The return of attacking starts and middle-order fluidity has steadied that narrative.

Still, Tilak Varma struck a measured tone when asked about ambitions of breaching extreme totals. “I would not say we want to score more than 250, but if we get a good start, then of course we’ll go for it.”

As India prepares for a high-stakes showdown, the emphasis is clear: fearless cricket over fear of failure in T20 World Cup 2026.
