Tamim Iqbal Appointed BCB President as Government Dissolves Board Over Election Irregularities

DHAKA: Former captain Tamim Iqbal has been named the new president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) after the government moved to dissolve the previous administration earlier this week. The decision follows an inquiry into the board’s election process held in October last year.

At 37, Tamim becomes the youngest president in the history of the Bangladesh Cricket Board and will oversee an interim setup tasked with stabilising operations. He will head an 11-member ad-hoc committee that includes former captain Minhajul Abedin and ex-international Athar Ali Khan, alongside several administrators and stakeholders.

Government Intervention and ICC Communication

The move came after a government-backed investigation reviewed allegations linked to governance and the conduct of the board elections. The findings were presented to officials at the Ministry of Sports, prompting action from the National Sports Council.

“As part of the National Sports Council's responsibility, we have informed the ICC that this board of directors was not formed in a proper manner, and is not able to complete its work in a proper manner,” Mohammed Aminul Ahesan, the NSC sports director, said.

“We have informed the ICC our decision to dissolve this board of directors. The NSC plays an important role for Bangladesh cricket or any sport in Bangladesh and on behalf of the government. Therefore, we are optimistic about the BCB and we think that the ICC will definitely uphold this decision,” he added.

The previous leadership, headed by Aminul Islam, had faced growing scrutiny in recent weeks, with multiple resignations from board members adding to the instability.

Tamim’s Cricket and Administrative Journey

Tamim Iqbal remains one of Bangladesh’s most experienced cricketers, having represented the national side across formats for over a decade. He led the team in 38 matches and was part of several key overseas results, including a series win in South Africa.

After stepping away from international cricket in 2025, Tamim continued in domestic competitions before health concerns ended his playing career. He later entered cricket administration and had previously shown interest in a leadership role within the Bangladesh Cricket Board.

His appointment now places him at the centre of efforts to rebuild governance and restore stability within Bangladesh cricket.
