ICC T20 World Cup 2026 Breaks Viewership Milestone With Record Audience in India

ICC T20 World Cup 2026 Breaks Viewership Milestone With Record Audience in India

The ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2026 has achieved a major broadcasting milestone, emerging as the most-watched edition of the tournament in India’s history. According to official figures, the competition has already crossed 500 million viewers in the country alone.

The announcement was confirmed by Jay Shah, chairman of the International Cricket Council, who shared the update through his social media platform. The record comes even before the tournament reached its final stages, showing the immense engagement from cricket fans.

The tournament was originally designed to expand cricket’s global reach while also improving digital accessibility. With high-intensity matches and strong online engagement, the event has successfully delivered on those objectives.

Jay Shah Highlights Digital Growth

Sharing the achievement with fans, Shah expressed his appreciation for the overwhelming response from Indian audiences.

He wrote on his 'X' handle:

"The journey of the @ICC #T20WorldCup 2026 began with the ambition to make it the most #global & #accessible Cricket event ever. I am humbled that viewership for the event in India has crossed 500 million, the highest ever for any T20 World Cup in history."

Shah also acknowledged the rapid growth of digital streaming, particularly through the platform JioHotstar.

“It was also heartening to see concurrent viewers @JioHotstar hit a peak of 60.5 million. With Knock-out matches for the tournament starting tonight, we hope that the immeasurable love our events receive from Indian fans helps break more records,” he added.

Tournament Still Has Crucial Matches Ahead

Interestingly, the tournament achieved this T20 World Cup viewership record even before the semi-finals and final were played. This suggests that the numbers could increase further as the competition reaches its climax.

The previous edition of the tournament, held in the Americas in 2024, also attracted strong audiences, but the 2026 edition has already surpassed those figures.

One of the tournament’s most memorable moments came during the final clash between India and South Africa at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, where South Africa secured a 76-run victory.

With the remaining knockout matches expected to draw massive attention, the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 continues to reinforce its position as one of the most widely followed sporting events in the world.
