James Hopes Named New Head Coach of Sydney Sixers

James Hopes Named New Head Coach of Sydney Sixers

Sydney Sixers have named former Australia white-ball allrounder and current Punjab Kings bowling coach James Hopes as their new BBL coach.

The 47-year-old replaces Greg Shipperd on a two-year contract. Shipperd was removed from the role midway through his deal, even though he guided the Sixers to the BBL final in January. Another Punjab Kings assistant coach, Brad Haddin, had already taken over as coach of New South Wales’ Sheffield Shield and One-Day Cup sides after Shipperd’s exit.

This will be Hopes’ first job as a head coach. However, he has plenty of coaching experience as a bowling coach in the IPL, BBL, and MLC. He has also worked with Queensland and, more recently, Tasmania in Australia’s domestic cricket system.

Speaking about the appointment, James Hopes said that he is excited for the role, as the Sixers club has a rich history in Australian cricket.

"I'm incredibly honoured to join the Sydney Sixers, a club with a proud history and a strong identity built on consistency, competitiveness and connection with its fans. I'm excited to work with a talented playing group and contribute to the next phase of the Sixers' success in the BBL." said James Hopes.

Meanwhile, Sixers general manager Rachael Haynes also applauded the signing of Hopes, saying his experience will help the team to move forward.

"James is an exceptional cricket mind with a proven track record of developing players and building high‑performing environments. His depth of experience across Australian domestic cricket and international franchise competitions makes him an outstanding fit for the Sixers. We're pleased to welcome him into the club as we enter an exciting new chapter." said Sydney Sixers general manager Rachael Haynes.

Sydney Thunder are currently the only BBL side yet to appoint a coach for next season. The franchise is still searching for a replacement after ending its partnership with Trevor Bayliss.

At the same time, Melbourne Renegades will also need a new WBBL coach after Simon Helmot decided to leave before the end of his contract. He is likely to move into a coaching position in an overseas franchise competition.
