Switzerland Beat Colombia on Penalties to Reach World Cup Quarter-Finals
Switzerland booked their place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1954 after beating Colombia in a penalty shootout.
Both teams started brightly and played attacking football. Colombia relied on quick passing, while Switzerland looked more physical in their approach.
James Rodriguez and Luis Diaz were lively for Colombia, while Granit Xhaka found it difficult to influence the game because of the close marking from Jefferson Lerma.
Switzerland goalkeeper Gregor Kobel made an excellent save to deny Gustavo Puerta before the first cooling break. At the other end, Colombia goalkeeper Camilo Vargas produced two fine saves to stop Fabian Rieder's powerful shot and Dan Ndoye's low effort.
The game remained evenly balanced, with both teams attacking regularly but failing to create many clear chances, leaving the score at 0-0 at half-time.
Djibril Sow, who came on after half-time, slipped at a crucial moment as Switzerland looked to score early in the second half. Soon after, Fabian Rieder's excellent free-kick tested Gustavo Puerta as the match continued in much the same way as the opening half.
The two teams stayed evenly matched as the second half progressed, with almost equal possession and the same number of touches inside the opposition box.
Luis Diaz then forced another save with a shot on target, producing one of the best chances of the match before the second cooling break. Both teams kept pushing for a winner, but despite Dan Ndoye's strong run into the penalty area, he dragged his shot wide as the game moved closer to extra time.
Switzerland and Columbia then played with the same intensity in the extra time, but strong defending at both ends kept the score level.
Before the match went to penalties, Granit Xhaka and Jaminton Campaz both missed excellent chances to score the winner.
In the shootout, Davinson Sanchez gave Switzerland an early advantage after hitting the crossbar with his penalty. However, Manuel Akanji failed to take advantage, sending his effort over the bar.
Switzerland regained control when Gregor Kobel made a superb save to deny Cucho Hernandez. Ruben Vargas then calmly converted the winning penalty to send the Swiss into the quarter-finals.
The victory takes Switzerland into the World Cup quarter-finals for only the third time in their history, where they will face defending champions Argentina.
