Switzerland Top Group B After Late Onslaught Against Bosnia

Switzerland Top Group B After Late Onslaught Against Bosnia

Johan Manzambi and Ruben Vargas scored three goals in the final 15 minutes, and a late penalty sealed Switzerland’s 4-1 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the latest World Cup match.

Both teams started the match on a high note, but failed to score any goal in the first half. The Swiss forwards tried their best to break the defense of Bosnia, but couldn’t find any real opportunity to get their name on the scoresheet.

Switzerland coach Murat Yakin then made three changes during the second-half drinks break, bringing on Manzambi, Ruben Vargas, and Djibril Sow. The move paid off as two of the substitutes ended up on the scoresheet.

Bosnia’s problems increased six minutes later when Tarik Muharemovic pulled down Embolo as he ran through on goal, and referee Joao Pinheiro showed a red card.

With a man down, Bosnia could not fight back. Vargas then put the game to bed with his first World Cup goal, finishing calmly after being set up by Embolo with six minutes left.

In the final minute of normal time, Vargas and Manzambi linked up again, with Manzambi finishing from close range. Bosnia did manage a late reply when Ermin Mahmic scored his first senior international goal with a strong volley in stoppage time.

There was still time for one more moment, as Granit Xhaka scored from the penalty spot after Amar Memic fouled Sow inside the box.

The win takes Switzerland to four points from two games, putting them close to a place in the last 32 ahead of their match against Canada next Wednesday.
