Switzerland Dominate Scotland To Secure Comfortable Nations League Victory

Switzerland picked up a comfortable 3-0 win over Scotland in the UEFA Nations League, with the hosts playing with 10 men for almost 80 minutes. The victory also gave Switzerland back-to-back wins in the competition for the first time since 2022.

After drawing their opening game in Ljubljana on Saturday, Sebastien Pocognoli was hoping for a better start in his first home match as Scotland’s manager. However, things quickly went against his side at Hampden Park.

Switzerland soon found a way through as Dan Ndoye broke clear of the Scotland defence following a quick move. As a result, Jack Hendry was left with little choice but to bring him down and stop the attack.

The referee initially awarded a penalty, but a review showed that the foul had taken place outside the box. Hendry was shown a red card, and things got even worse for Scotland as Ricardo Rodriguez curled the resulting free-kick into the top corner.

Scotland still managed to create a few promising attacks despite being a man down. Andrew Robertson came closest to getting them back into the game, but his effort went over the crossbar.

Meanwhile, the visitors continued to control the game, with Johan Manzambi causing problems for the Scotland defence before sending his shot just wide. Zeki Amdouni then tested Angus Gunn with a long-range effort, while another attempt from the Switzerland forward went wide.

In the second half, Switzerland played with the same intensity and kept Scotland pinned back. Freuler was unable to keep his effort on target, while Jashari also came close to adding to the pressure but sent his powerful strike over the bar.

The visitors eventually made their dominance count in the 55th minute, as Ndoye sent a low cross into the box, and Elvedi finished it first time to put the ball past Gunn. 

Pocognoli then responded by making three changes, hoping to give Scotland a way back into the contest. It made little difference, though, as Ndoye went close again before Rieder saw his curling effort drift just wide of the post.

Meanwhile, Amdouni was repeatedly looking to make a mark in the contest after performing brilliantly in the last match. He eventually got the chance in the 82nd minute, when his powerful strike beat Gunn to make it 3-0 for Switzerland.

The visitors then solidified their defence in the closing stages to see out the game and secure a convincing victory. Scotland, meanwhile, were left frustrated after failing to put in a strong performance despite playing on home soil.
