"No Pressure, No Fun" – Suryakumar Yadav Demands Courage as India Face New Zealand in ICC T20 World Cup Final

"No Pressure, No Fun" – Suryakumar Yadav Demands Courage as India Face New Zealand in ICC T20 World Cup Final

India captain Suryakumar Yadav believes his side must embrace fearlessness as they return to the same ground that witnessed their heartbreak in the 2023 ODI World Cup final. This time, however, he insists the context and the team are very different.

Speaking ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup final against New Zealand national cricket team, the India skipper framed the moment as part of a longer journey rather than a chance for redemption alone.

“We started this journey two years ago, and the circle has come back to the same stadium again where we left in 2023,” Suryakumar said. “Be courageous in tough situations, that's the simple message to the team.”

India’s dressing room arrives with a significantly different mindset compared to the side that fell short in Ahmedabad three years ago. Since that loss, the team has lifted two global trophies, the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, creating a squad that is both battle-tested and confident under pressure.

Suryakumar highlighted the value of experience within the group, pointing to senior players and coaching staff who have navigated high-stakes moments in global tournaments.

“There are a lot of players in the dressing room who have played ICC tournaments, including our coach, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Axar Patel. They have handled pressure situations in ICC events,” he said. “This really helps, and chatting with them in the bus or over dinner, we talk about how to overcome tough situations in the game, and we find a solution.”

Interestingly, the captain played down concerns about tactical threats from New Zealand, particularly the possibility of offspin targeting India’s left-handed batters during the powerplay.

“We haven't discussed the offspin threat at all,” he said. “If in the final they bring on two spinners, then we have to face them, and I'm sure we'll handle it.”

For Suryakumar, the occasion also carries personal significance. While India’s recent ICC triumphs came under Rohit Sharma, this marks his first major final as captain.

“It is obviously a special feeling that I am going to lead tomorrow, and to be leading such a wonderful side into a final. That too on home soil,” he said. “Of course, there are nerves. There will be butterflies in the stomach. But as I always say, if there is no pressure, there is no fun.”
