Mitchell Starc, one of the most feared fast bowlers of modern cricket, has officially retired from T20 internationals. The left-arm quick, who played 65 matches and claimed 79 wickets, said the decision was taken to keep himself fresh for Australia’s upcoming Test challenges and the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Starc is now 35 and took part in Australia's historic 2021 T20 World Cup victory in the UAE. His last outing in the format was at the 2024 Caribbean edition. With best figures of 4 for 20 against the West Indies, Starc ends as Australia’s second-highest wicket-taker in T20Is.

“Test cricket has always been my priority,” Starc said, while recalling the joy of lifting the T20 World Cup trophy. “Looking ahead to the away Indian tour, the Ashes, and the 2027 World Cup, I feel this is the best way to stay fit and perform at my peak.”

Australia’s selectors backed the move. George Bailey praised Starc’s knack for breaking games open, hailing his contributions across formats. “Mitch should be incredibly proud of his T20 career. He was an integral part of the 2021 win, and his ability to strike early made a huge difference,” Bailey said.

Starc’s retirement comes as Australia prepares for a three-match T20I series against New Zealand. Cameron Green is to miss the series for the Sheffield Shield, and Marcus Stoinis returns after a brief international break.

From his firecracker yorkers to match-winning centuries, Starc's T20 legacy is one that few can match. Now, he will turn his attention completely towards red-ball cricket and another at the World Cup in 2027.
