Sri Lanka Ramps Up Security for India–Pakistan Match in T20 World Cup 2026

Sri Lanka Ramps Up Security for India–Pakistan Match in T20 World Cup 2026

Sri Lanka will deploy elite armed units to safeguard teams during next month’s T20 World Cup. The security plan has been further strengthened for India-Pakistan matches. As a co-host with India, Sri Lanka will host 20 matches between February 7 and March 8.

The two sides are set to face off in their Group A clash in Colombo on February 15. “From the time they step out of the airport till they return to their aircraft, they will be protected by armed guards,” an official said, requesting anonymity.

Historically, there have been political undertones in the cricket matches between India and Pakistan. These tensions were further intensified by the four-day border conflict that took place last year. Sri Lanka is giving the highest priority to smooth tournament operations. Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage said, “We are paying special attention to the India-Pakistan matches.”

Due to political tension, Pakistan refused to play its matches in India. The ICC moved these matches to neutral venues in Sri Lanka. Bangladesh also requested to move their matches for security reasons, but the ICC rejected the request, and Scotland was drafted in as their replacement.

Sri Lanka has maintained a neutral stance throughout these disputes. Cricket Secretary Bandula Dissanayake explained, “In these disputes among India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, we are remaining neutral; all of these are friendly nations.” Sri Lanka replied that it would host future tournaments in case any country is invited.

The T20 World Cup has also provided an opportunity to upgrade cricket venues in Sri Lanka. In Colombo, new floodlights have been installed at the Singhalese Sports Club.
