Kusal Mendis Named Captain as Star Studded Sri Lanka Announced Squad for WI Tour

COLOMBO: Kusal Mendis will lead Sri Lanka in both ODIs and T20Is during the upcoming Caribbean assignment after the country’s selectors named him captain for the limited-overs leg of the tour. The announcement came as Sri Lanka Cricket released the squads for the multi-format series against the West Indies cricket team.

The move sees Mendis take over the ODI and T20I captaincy roles previously held by Charith Asalanka and Dasun Shanaka. Dhananjaya de Silva will continue as captain of the Test side.

The Sri Lanka squad Against WI includes a blend of experienced internationals and younger players across all three formats. Mendis, who has already featured extensively for Sri Lanka in Tests, ODIs and T20Is, returns to leadership duties following the team’s early exit from the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026.

Tour Schedule and Squad Changes

Sri Lanka will begin the tour with a three-match ODI series at Sabina Park in Kingston from June 3 to June 8. The same venue will then host three T20Is between June 12 and June 15 before the teams move to Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound for two Test matches scheduled from June 25 to July 7.

Among the notable selections in the ODI squad are Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana and Dushmantha Chameera, while young players such as Pavan Rathnayake and Kamil Mishara have also retained their places.

The T20I setup includes several changes from recent assignments, with Shanaka returning to the squad alongside Lasith Croospulle and Nuwan Thushara. In the Test group, experienced batter Dinesh Chandimal and spinner Prabath Jayasuriya remain key figures as Sri Lanka prepare for red-ball cricket in Caribbean conditions.
