Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh in an absolute thriller in the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup. They won the match against the tigers by just 7 runs, courtesy of some splendid bowling by Chamari Athapaththu in the last over. It was a game of nerves in which Sri Lanka got the better of Bangladesh by showcasing temperament and experience. With this victory, the hopes of Lankan lions are alive, however, Bangladesh has been knocked out of the tournament.

The game between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh at DY Patil was largely dominated by bowlers. The slow nature of the surface didn’t allow batters from both teams to play shots freely. Due to this, batting became difficult, as bowlers kept on taking advantage of the wicket to halt the scoring rate.

Batting first, Sri Lanka had a horrible start, as they lost Vishmi Gunaratne on the very first ball of the match. It was a fabulous delivery from Marufa Akter that nipped back into the pads of Vishmi Gunaratne sharply. The wicket brought a great blow to the Sri Lankan opening plans, however, Chamari Athapaththu steadied the innings afterwards.

She played a great knock alongside Hasini Perera in the first innings of the match. The class of Chamari Athapaththu was at full display during the batting, as she utilized all her experience in the middle to steady the Lankan innings. She got out to Rabeya Khan in the 13th over after making quick 46 runs.

The fall of Athapaththu didn’t change the plans of Hasini Perera. She kept on playing positively from one end to keep the scoreboard ticking. Unfortunately, she didn’t receive much support from other batters after the fall of Chamari Athapaththu. This largely happened due to the great bowling effort of Bangladesh that kept things tight after the dismissal of the Sri Lankan captain.

Hasini Perera remained the star of the Sri Lankan batting, as she scored a gritty 85 runs when other batters were struggling badly. Nilakshika Silva was another batter who tried to lift the scoring rate by hitting boundaries positively. She got out to Shorna Akter after making a valuable 37 runs.

Apart from these batters, there were no real contributions from other players throughout the game. As a result, Sri Lanka scored just 202 at the end of the first innings. It was definitely a low total that required a strong bowling performance in the second innings, and Sri Lanka did exactly that.

When Bangladesh came out to chase the target, they experienced similar struggles in the batting. The slow nature of the surface didn’t allow them to play shots freely, and hence their openers got out very cheaply. Sharmin Akhter, who came to bat at number 3, played a solid knock in the match. She was supported by the captain, Nigar Sultana, at the other end to steady the innings. Their partnership allowed Bangladesh to move closer to the target, but then an unexpected collapse occurred.

The tigers were looking well set to win the match, as they needed just 9 runs off the last over. This was an easy situation, but Chamari Athapaththu had some other plans. She bowled one of the memorable spells of her career that resulted in 4 Bangladeshi wickets. It was complete chaos in the middle, as Bangladesh batters came into panic during the last over. Chamari Athapaththu held her nerves and defended the total valiantly, handing Sri Lanka a spectacular victory from the jaws of defeat.

In the end, Sri Lanka won the match by just 7 runs, keeping their hopes alive in the tournament. On the other hand, Bangladesh became the first team to get knocked out of the tournament. They would definitely be feeling very disappointed, as the game against Sri Lanka was in their hands. Unfortunately, they panicked at the wrong time and lost the plot when they needed a bit of calmness at the crease to chase down the total.
