WAVRE: Spain pulled off a tactical masterclass at the Belfius Hockey Arena, upsetting reigning world champions Germany in a thrilling encounter. Spain defeated Germany 2-1 to shake up the second-round standings of the 2026 Men’s FIH Hockey World Cup

The blockbuster Germany vs Spain fixture lived up to its heavyweight billing, delivering a high-octane display of elite modern hockey. After a cagey, scoreless first quarter defined by structured defensive units and physical midfield battles, the game burst to life in the second period. It was Germany who broke the deadlock in the 26th minute. Capitalizing on a swift transition, Justus Weigand found space inside the striking circle to fire a clinical shot past the Spanish goalkeeper. 

The opening goal sparked the German dugout, but the lead proved to be short-lived. Spain responded with immediate intensity, pinning the German defense deep into their own 23-meter area. Just four minutes later, Spain's star forward Jose Basterra’s clinical finish leveled the scoreline at 1-1, sending the teams into the halftime break deadlocked.
