Merino Brace Leads Spain to Victory Over Croatia in Nations League Thriller
Spain booked their place in the Nations League quarter-finals after a 2-1 win over Croatia on Tuesday night. The result also saw the reigning world champions extend their unbeaten streak to 42 matches.
Croatia looked far more organized after their heavy defeat to England at the weekend and made life difficult for Spain from the start. They stayed strong at the back, won several challenges and caused problems whenever they found space to attack on the break.
Spain struggled to deal with Croatia’s pressure and made several mistakes while trying to build attacks from the back. One of those errors gave the hosts a chance on the counter, with Ivan Perisic heading the ball into the net to put Croatia ahead. Spain made more mistakes that created further openings, but Unai Simon produced some important saves to keep the deficit at one goal.
Spain had most of the possession as they looked for a response, but they could not create a clear opening for much of the half. Their best chance came right at the end when Pedri sent a brilliant pass through to Lamine Yamal. The teenager went for the near post but his effort hit the side netting, keeping the visitors goalless in the first half.
Spain then made a change at the break as Luis de la Fuente brought Mikel Merino into the game. The move gave Spain more energy, and they started to put Croatia under greater pressure, with Lamine Yamal causing problems on the right.
Dani Olmo also grew into the game and played a key role in Spain’s equalizer. His pass found Merino, who made it 1-1 around the hour mark. Croatia continued to defend well and looked capable of holding on for a draw, but their task became harder when Ivan Perisic received a second yellow card and was sent off.
Spain then made more changes, with Rodri, Pedri, Olmo and Yamal all leaving the pitch. However, Fermin Lopez remained involved and watched Merino complete the comeback late in the game. Due to his scintillating strike, the visitors got a decisive lead which helped them to seal the win in a convincing fashion.
The victory extended Spain’s unbeaten run and kept them at the top of the group. More importantly, the result confirmed their place in the Nations League quarter-finals with a few matches still to play.
