Southampton FC booked their place in the Championship play-off final after a 2–1 extra-time win over Middlesbrough FC at St Mary’s, sealing a 3–2 aggregate result in the Southampton vs Middlesbrough semi-final.
The decisive moment came late in extra time when Shea Charles turned provider, sending a cross from the right that drifted through the penalty area and found the net at the far post. The goal settled a contest that remained evenly poised for long periods.
Middlesbrough made the early impact, with Riley McGree finishing a quick move to put the visitors ahead. The goal followed a low ball into the box from Callum Brittain, which McGree converted first time.
Southampton responded before the interval through Ross Stewart, who headed in from close range after a delivery from Ryan Manning. The equaliser ensured the tie remained level on aggregate at the end of normal time.
Both teams showed signs of fatigue in extra time, but Southampton gradually pushed higher and created more sustained pressure. That approach eventually led to the winning goal late in the second period.
Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert credited his players for maintaining their effort across both legs.
"The crowd was fantastic, it was a very special atmosphere when we came to the stadium,” Eckert said.
"Today we had to dig very deep and credit to the players for doing that over 120 minutes, I think over both legs it was very well deserved.
"I just said to the boys that we are not finished yet, you can be happy about the result but there is more to do.
"Credit to Shea (Charles), he's one of the players I speak to the most and there's a transition from being a talent to a senior professional and he's gone the very best way of maturing."
Middlesbrough committed players forward in the closing stages, including their goalkeeper for set pieces, but were unable to find a second goal.
Southampton will now meet Hull City AFC at Wembley on May 23, with promotion to Premier League at stake.
